The Syrians, Jordainians and Saudis welcome the extremists joining al Qaeda to export their version of Islam. One thing it does is remove those militant elements from their home country. Where does the Shia Caliphate fit into this picture?

On one hand it makes sense that Al Qeada would want to spread its influence beyond Iraq, the movement thrives on chaos and it makes sense to destabilize as many states as possible to create that environment. Palestine has had problems with Al Qeada in Gaza, adding another player to the split between Hamas and Fatah. Bur Syria is a different story in that it is a conduit for the Al Qeada in Iraq and any Lebanese Al Qeada elements in conflict with Hezbollah will complicate Syria’s relationship with Iran. I would think that getting involved in Lebanon is a dangerous strategy for them, unless there is some agreement with Syria that they would act as a proxy.
