Mitt And Newt: A Wodehouse Analysis

It looks like the Republican nominating contest has narrowed down to two finalists whose monikers sound like characters in a Wodehouse novel. Mitt and Newt. All that’s needed now to round out this protracted and embarrassing clownfest is for Ron, Michelle and Rick to drop away, and be replaced by Bingo, Bertie and Piggy.

The fact that many of Wodehouse’s male characters are also members of the Drones Club, an assemblage of well-heeled wastrels spouting inanities, well…In any case, here’s the skinny on the Mitt versus Newt choice.

Both are smart, though neither has shown any sign of being especially wise.

Both are nicely tied in with power centers that aren’t especially linked to the middles class, Wall Street and big corporations.

Both speak well, but neither has come forth with a single policy position that in any discernible way would make the economy one whit better.

Both have a grip on foreign policy issues that is superior to others running for the right to top the Republican ticket, but that isn’t saying much.

Mitt has fewer personal issues in his past that could cause problems with voters, while Newt has an edge among voters who put religious affiliations atop their voting choices.

Mitt has a head of hair to die for, but Newt gives off avuncular vibes that might appeal to people who lack an uncle of their own and feel bereft in consequence,

Neither Mitt nor Newt would make a good president, but given what is likely to be coming down on this country in the near future, maybe one of them should be given the job as a penance.
