Citizen- Maybe we need him more than he needs us. I can't help but think how different the last 7 years would have been if he'd succeeded in getting the recount. He went into a tailspin that I'm sure he'd rather not repeat.

kritter,

While I agree with your "don't PO the Clintons" point to a degree, I think that Gore will not run if someone truly breaks away from the pack and is, right now, enjoying his view from the sidelines.

Conversely, I believe (perhaps it's really hope) that if the Dem field is somehow still split after mega-super-duper-Tuesday he might let himself be drafted as a consensus candidate.

Then again, I might be wrong.

I think if Hillary wasn't running, he would have declared by now. Also, a Gore-Obama or Gore-Richardson would do the GOP in in '08. But I don't blame him for not wanting to make enemies out of the Clintons.

mikkel, what are you referring to when you mention "free market charity"? I have been exploring new ways to address philanthropic issues and so I am curious what you had in mind when writing that.

Gore can afford to wait. In 1992 Mario Cuomo could have entered after the debates, and become the instant new principal Democratic candidate. Gore wouldn't wait that long, but it's logical to envision his waiting until after the first, early round of primaries and the resulting "shakeup" as well as "shakeout" before deciding whether or not to run. It saves him money, too.

Historical stats would be on his side as well. I read somewhere that when prior POTUS candidates lost their first election, not in popular, but in electoral, the always won on the second try.

Although kritter reminds me I've got to dig up some of those old jokes......waddya mean by "he was right on the internet?" Meaning who "invented it"?........chortle, chortle, chortle.

> How about because he’s
> been right about— the war,
> the internet and global
> warming

["global warming" -- rolling eyes]

I believe he'd do well if he ran. He has a HUGE fan base and there's a lot of people wanting some revenge after Gore lost in 2000. What better replacement of the current President could there be, in that sense? (As with Hillary Clinton, I do not question Gore's competence, K., so don't suspect that I do. In public he's largely robotic but in fact he has a quite a mind, from what even critics have said.)

I think Polman has it about right, but he doesn't take into account the effect of future developments. Come September--

- We may well not have any real change in the current situation in Iraq or in the domestic politicking around Iraq

- Hillary might still be leading in the polls, but looking vulnerable

- Obama and/or Edwards might appear unlikely to turn Hillary's vulnerability to his/their advantage due to problems in his/their own candidacies

- a GOP candidate (Fred Thompson) might have developed some positive momentum, based largely on anti-immigration sentiment combined with some effective fear-mongering.

This combination of circumstances or some other might have a critical mass of influential figures publicly urging Gore to run, and at that point his candidacy becomes much more likely than it appears now.

mikkel- the talk about borderline socialism is right wing smear, because both men still present a threat. They were popular and successful in office and have been popular and successful out of office- so they must be socialists.

I guess the current capitalist-in-chief doesn't fare too well by comparison!

Even though I would love to see a Gore/Obama ticket, I don't necessarily think it is in his best interest to go through the meat-grinder again. It nearly destroyed him the first time. Its great to see him happy and productive though, and I find that much of what he has to say hits a responsive chord with me. I guess I'm sick of faith-based politics and hope its dying out with Falwell. I do think a Gore presidency would lead us into the future instead of back into the past- as many of the GOP candidates seem to want to do.

BTW, casual- Chris Matthews is keeping his eye on Gore's weight loss or lack of it, lol.

I wouldn't bet against a Gore candidacy. True, he's feeling much freer out of electoral politics, but the pressure to run will increase and it would be only human to accede to a Gore-Obama ticket that could cinch '08 for Democrats. As I said in a post yesterday, he's like the hard-to-get guy at a singles bar, but don't be surprised if he eventually makes a move:

Clinton has said he feels he is more powerful now to get actual change than as president. I wouldn't be surprised if Gore feels the same way.

Ironically, with all of the talk about them being borderline socialists, they are both helping to pave the way (along with Gates, et al.) to create a new brand of free-market based charity. I think it'll prove widely successful.

A lot of the hope and hype surrounding the Democrats and Al Gore is the idea that they wouldn't have invaded Iraq. I'm not so sure that's true, given that the Democrats are responsible for more of our wars of aggression than Republicans.

On the blogger conference calls (and I will say this publically) TMV has a lot of cobloggers and they are free to link what they want. But I have decided I'm not linking to or writing about any candidate conference calls to bloggers if TMV has not been invited.

My schedule is so hectic that I probably can't make a conference call myself but I would offer it to other TMV writers if I can't do it for any reason. This exclusion won't influence my posts that I write on anyone (I have written posts and before weblogs blasting politicos I later voted for for other reasons). But I will not be linking to or writing about candidates talking to bloggers if TMV was not in on the calls.

But as you noted, TMV as a site does not endorse candidates, although the wide sprectrum of writers offers people who might let their individual preferences known (and we don't all agree with each other on tmv). I myself tend to ask very tough questions in interviews which is due to my newspaper background. But candidates who get non-PR questions often do quite well because they might answer a question in a way that makes the resulting story more compelling than a perfunctory PR venture.

Anyone who writes on TMV can attest that all of our plates are quite full, but that isn't the issue with the conference calls. Candidates, as most of talk radio, only want to talk to blogs on the left and right, as if there is no center in the blogosphere, a myth the media also perpetuates.

On the blogger conference calls (and I will say this publically) TMV has a lot of cobloggers and they are free to link what they want. But I have decided I’m not linking to or writing about any candidate conference calls to bloggers if TMV has not been invited.

My schedule is so hectic that I probably can’t make a conference call myself but I would offer it to other TMV writers if I can’t do it for any reason. This exclusion won’t influence my posts that I write on anyone (I have written posts and before weblogs blasting politicos I later voted for for other reasons).
About the conference calls: you are quite right. We're not being asked, because we don't belong to either party. We're too independent.

Gore: Agreed - I don't think he's running. He's having a great time, he's loved, he's earning lots of $...

he would a fool to run. It would make his life difficult again. Everything he touches right now turns into gold. He'd better enjoy it.
