President Bush is giving the commencement address today at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. As CNN puts it (check for updates), “[t]he speech [is] aimed at defending a key part of the president’s war strategy — the contention that the United States cannot withdraw from Iraq because al Qaeda would fill the vacuum in the Middle East”. In other words, it is yet another attempt by the president to defend himself on Iraq. As if we haven’t heard enough already. You can only spin failure so many times, and you can only find so many excuses for failure to continue.

Of course what would happen should the US completely withdraw from Iraq is a topic of legitimate debate. AQ would not be able to “take over Iraq” but they could certainly operate freely in select locations.
