Mac and Cheese

The religious right was not always about abortion and gays.  It was originally all about desegregation, that’s what Falwell and Robertson were preaching against.  Opposition to desegregation was becoming increasingly politically incorrect.  This was when Francis Schaeffer made his appearance and convinced the religious right they should concentrate on the issue of abortion.  But the old prejudices die hard and we have this from Pat Robertson:

“What is this ‘mac and cheese’? Is that a black thing?”

Now I’m as Arian as you can get – blond hair, blue eyes – an English father and a Swedish mother.  But I love mac and cheese.  Not that disgusting stuff from Kraft – I make it from scratch with extra sharp cheddar. No Pat, it’s not a black thing – its a great meal for those of us who have not made millions pushing hate in the name of God.  There are times I wished I believed in hell so there would be some appropriate place for you Pat to go.

Well Ron, I’m actually a bit more Aryan than you (I had an uncle once removed who was in the Luftwaffe) and my family had distinct versions of macaroni and cheese that would be served depending on the occasion.

What we called “stick together” mac and cheese was my Polish grandmother’s recipe. When mom didn’t have time to make that, we were subject to the “non-stick together” variety, which was store bought.

Never in our many discussions of the relative merits of “stick together” vs “non-stick together” was there any discussion of black people.

    Ever.

It really doesn’t take that much longer to make it from scratch. A little butter and flour to make a roux – couple of minutes. Add some milk to make a white sauce – add some grated extra sharp cheddar ( I usually include some Romano but that’s me). Prepare some macaroni – about 6 minutes to al dente. Mix with the sauce – done. Fifteen minutes max – not much different than the package variety but a hell of a lot better.

Whoa hey hold up there pal. Kraft Mac n Cheese shall not be spoken of in that way! It is the best by far of the pre packaged mac n cheeses and one of the best fast comfort foods out there. Sometimes I just can’t believe the intolerance on this site.

Oh yea, and then there is Pat Robertson. Some good ole fashioned ignorant bigotry there, fits right in with other major players in the modern conservative movement. Hey you guys remember when Rush was on air for all of 30 seconds before his mouth let slip an racist remark I’m sure he didn’t even think was racist until someone pointed it out to him? That was great. Good times GOP, good times….

Well Ron I’ll have to respectfully disagree. Macaroni and Cheese – as a casserole dish – takes a lot longer. Just getting the oven up to temperature takes longer than Kraft Mac n Cheese from start to finish.

But I am willing to concede that there are other ways of preparing this dish. I had a variation in this hole in the wall restaurant in the Bahamas a couple years ago that just about knocked me out of my seat.

Of course, it was prepared by black people…

you guys crack me up. I almost want to say, marry me. I love mac and cheese, and I know JUST what you mean about Polish mac vs other kinds. Probably what is funniest of all is poor Mr. Pat. I honestly think he is showing some pretty loose association thinking there. Mac and Black? Sounds like a cool new version of Apple… the new, black chrome computer. I hope you’re laughing with me.

    Blessed Thanksgiving, by the way

    thanks,
    dr.e

There are some people and some things said and written that just cause my mind to do a playback of Dueling Banjos and the association with Deliverance. Robertson is one of them.
