Maybe its because, I’m not a Republican, but other than the fact that they keep pandering to the holyrollers, the field does not seem that bad. (with the exception of Newt, Gilmore and Romney) McCain is a man of conscience, and Huckabee’s a decent sort. Maybe their just too moderate for the GOP hardliners.

I think part of the problem is that moderate GOP voters are hungry for a candidate who is both enlightened on Iraq (recognizes a need for dramatic change in strategy, including withdrawal) and flexible/moderate on social issues. Giuliani is the latter but not the former; same for McCain (if you assume his pandering to the RR is not indicative of his true feelings). Huckabee is a decent sort; but his political stances are still too narrow for the moderate R voters.

Pete- I thought most of the complaints were coming from the conservatives, which is why they are banking on Fred Thompson. They really are looking for someone like Bush and George Allen, a Southern Conservative Christian who has very conservative social values, but is a hawk on ME policy. They don’t like Giuli because he’s pro-life, McCain because he’s anti-torture and not a Southern evangelical, Romney because he instituted universal health care in a liberal Northern state. Huckabee raised taxes, Gilmore , Duncan and Thompson are unelectable.
