Does anyone know of any studies that show its actual, practical impact? What percentage of college admissions are granted due to affirmitive action? What percentage of jobs awarded?

Both opponants and proponants have every motivation to exaggerate the effects of affirmitive action.

Hello Angela! First post I read of yours and we are in complete agreement. Affirmative Action, if it must exist, should be based solely on socioeconomic status and never on race. I can appreciate wishing to take families out of a cycle of poverty, and rewarding those kids who manage to get those good grades against all odds, I do not appreciate refusing that award because the student is the wrong color.

If you believe in the diversity argument, then Senator Obama's children still deserve Affirmative Action. In the Gratz decision, the State of Michigan did not argue that AA was needed to make up for past racism or historic harm. The government argued that AA is needed to ensure that universties, employers, and other organization have a critical mass of minorities to ensure that all students learn in a diverse environment. thus, since there are so many more Asian-American with high SAT scores versus African-Americans, then the government shold be able to lower the bar for blacks.

Senator Obama is still arguing that AA should be based on diversity and that class AA should be added to race/ethnicity based AA to ensure a more diverse learning environment.

Of course, such a program in inherently unfair since it applies separate and unequal admission standards and since it harms upper middle class suburban whites and Asian-Americans.

Welcome Angela!

Affirmative action has been a somewhat thorny issue since the Bakke Case in the late 70s.
