These teachers should be ashamed of themselves and should be fired immediately. What a bunch of idiots.
Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.
It was, according to the teachers, meant as a “learning experience.”
Good, lets turn this into a learning experience for the teachers as well. The lesson they have to learn: doing stupid things like that results in your firing.
The children will, most likely, be haunted by nightmares for days, for some even weeks and / or months to come.
Cross posted at my own blog.
Agreed, elementary students are too young to need this “learning experience”. If they’d had made it a drill, and announced it as such, then my feelings would be different.
I agree.
Rambie – why should they hold drills like this at all? Despite the sensationalism of today’s media, the likelihood of this happening at any campus is so remote that I cannot see how there is any preparatory value that exceeds the irrational fear it would impose on elementary kids.
This is what we really think we should be teaching our children? That any minute a gunman might break into what most of them think of as one of the safest places (rightfully so) in their lives?
I fear that the ‘gunmen at the school’ is headed towards being the next ‘pre-school Satanic child molesters’ meme.
AR – I hear news reports that the trip is a yearly event with a situation where the students are scared. After VT, this is a BIG mistake, but if the trip has a history of such “scaring” then disciple is required, but not dismissal. If these teachers are willing to do field and overnight trips with students then they are probably caring teachers worthy of another chance.

Here’s the article from a local Nsaheville paper, seems the wire services and cable are overreating to the story.

When a story like this happens, it’s allways best to get the “actual” story from a local source. Cable and wire sources leave out significant details, just like the Dearborn police officer calling 911 to report a hemp overdose.

The above link is to Mufreesboros’ local paper. At no time did the teachers/gunman appear anywhere near the students, the gun fire was in the backround. If an adult or older student appeared in the state park dorms dressed as a gunman, then we would have an “outrage”. This was teachers and students going on an anual trip with a prank done in bad taste, nothing more.
Query for David Schraub: Which was more worthy of firing- this or shock jocks goofing on Condo Rice and boinking?
AR, I mostly agree. But in light of the school shootings we’ve had over the last decade, I wouldn’t object to a drill like this too much.
Rudi, good find on the article.
