I think it would truly make american politics into a sideshow. A he-sad-she-said popularity bashfest that would be more like a high school student body president election than one for the highest office in the USA.

It’s ironic, but they may go back to the Goldwater mold 40 years after straying away from his brand of prudent, organic, humble conservatism.
