Penn State Said to Be Planning Paterno’s Exit Amid Scandal

The New York Times:

Joe Paterno’s tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to two people briefed on conversations among the university’s top officials.

The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit, but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious national brand will not survive to coach another season. Discussions about how to manage his departure have begun, according to the two people.

Apparently this alleged pedophilia sexual abuse has been covered up for some time now. If it has, then corruption has contaminated the sports program. The only response should be canceling the sports program at Penn State.

It is time for Paterno, McQueary, and Spanier to step aside. They may have done their legal duties, but that is not enough.

As a Dickinson School of Law (At PSU) Alum, I am ashamed of my alma mater.

@ Allen: It’ll never happen. It’s a cash, and thus sacred, cow. It brings in millions, including turning the endowment from near nil in the 1960s to over a billion dollars this year.

I think Paterno will be gone before the Nebraska game this weekend; as it should be. This is the worst scandal to have ever hit college athletics. Forget athletics. This is a story of human tragedy. To have looked the other way for 15 years as children were molested or suffered from being molested is unforgivable.

Expect to see civil suits against the university and administrators that proteced the monster Sandusky much the way the Catholic Church has been sued. For goodness sake, the man maintained an office and used university facilities up until last week!

PJB, well tuition ought to be dadgum FREE for the poor then!

    KP-

I could not agree with you more.
