Are We About to See a “New” (National Version) Rick Perry?

Is Texas Gov. Rick Perry about to remake himself on the national stage after a launch that will be studied by political science in recent years as a case study in how to obliterate a well-hyped entrance? Perhaps so. This video is making the rounds in the mainstream media, new media and on You Tube. It shows a relaxed, passionate, likable Rick Perry. If he can appear this way in debates, his numbers will go up. The contrast between the Rick Perry we’ve seen in debates and what we see in the video below is so dramatic you almost swear it’s an actor and can’t be the Rick Perry we have grown to know (and not necessarily love):

This is closer to the Rick Perry who Americans believed would show up at the debates, if advance hype was to be believed.

This is my second viewing of the edited clips from Gov. Perry’s keynoter speech at Friday’s NH Cornerstone dinner.

I realized that the two segments that seemed odd were Perry mimicking Ron Paul (Gold is good), and Herman Cain (tax plan).

I wish I could view the whole speech if only to find out what tomcat means in Paint Creek, Texas.

I appreciate The Moderate Voice – we need more islands of sanity – an island bigger than Australia!

I am 59, and grew up in football-crazed Miami when it was a small city, and came north on scholarship to an elite college where I learned my high school could beat any team in the Ivy or Little-Ivy League.

I understand the difference between a “yell leader” at Texas A&M, and a “cheerleader” at Yale. Huge difference that a phD anthropologist will someday explain :)

My first exposure to Perry was his book tour interview with Jon Stewart, Nov. 2010.
Then his announcement speech at RedState in August. I watched his 71-minute interview with the editorial board of the NH Union Leader on C-Span a few hours before he keynoted at Cornerstone, where the sold-out audience of 440 gave him an extended standing ovation.

All this to say is that, even with the debates, I always see a Rick Perry who takes a beating with grace, has a heart bigger than Texas, a subtle sense of humor, and is the only candidate for the Presidency who stirs a glimmer of hope that America can be America again.

Maybe you just have to understand that a “yell leader” generates confidence, to never give up…

I am secular and a disillusioned fiscal conservative dem.

    Leadership fuels confidence.

Frankly I don’t care so much whether or not my prez is “likable”. I want him or her to be knowledgable, have sensible priorities, and have the courage of conviction. In any case, Perry will have the opportunity to change the perception he’s gained so far since he will be in the next 5 debates. That said, I’m not a fan.
