Jindal Wins, GOP Heading For Sweep in Louisiana

Governor Bobby Jindal of Lousiana was easily re-elected tonight with about 67% of the vote.

The GOP also appears to be headed for a sweep of the rest of the statewide races, indeed in several cases the contest was between two Republicans as the Democrats did not field any candidates.

The Republicans also appear likely to retain control of both houses of the legislature.

Given the one time dominance of the state by Democrats, this level of meltdown is somewhat stunning. In many other southern States the Democrats still manage to win a few contests, or at least compete in them.

    Not really…

The Democrats get 90 percent of the African-American vote, and the Repugs get 70 percent or more of the White vote.

Southern voting isn’t about ideology, class or interest, it’s purely about race.

    Gone With the 2010 Win

To the extent that this is a realignment of state and local Southern politics, it is thoroughly racial. White Southerners have finally lost their tolerance for white Democrats. Before last year’s elections, there were seven white representatives from the Deep South (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina) in the congressional Democratic caucus. Today, there’s one (from Georgia).

The Democratic Party that remains after this white exodus is smaller, weaker, and blacker than it has ever been. Indeed, based on state exit polls from the 2000 election, African Americans account for a large majority of Democrats in the Deep South, a historically unprecedented phenomenon. As local parties become darker, whites are less likely to remain.

After Katrina a lot of refugees from New Orleans almost all black and democratic voters, never returned. Many settled in Texas where they made the state more blue, or at least less red.
