SNL skewered Fox & Friends and Hank William’s Jr.’s controversial comparisons of Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler:
And here’s the original for- real segment that got Hank Williams, Jr. axed from ESPN:
The original almost plays like an SNL skit.
I haven’t blogged on this, but the (hideous, reprehensible) analogy apart, Williams made the mistake that some celebrities do when they are hooked up with corporations and talk politics or make flip statements: corporations spend millions to create brands that transcend political wars, national divisions and international borders. They can’t have their brands damaged by a celebrity they signed up because of broad-based appeal who decides to make him or herself a divisive figure. If Williams plans going into politics he’ll find even a segment of Republicans won’t support him because lash-out name calling will only go so far.
No Republicans create name calling lash-out people for the rest of us to tollerate. They just sit back and laugh at us tollerating them.
Funny and—what’s scary—so true.
I’m glad TMV hasn’t really glommed onto this one.
Personally, I find the whole thing ridiculous.
1) Hank Williams Jr. is a drunk. Having a drunk on air, and asking him about politics, was stupid.
2) Because he’s a drunk, what he says is largely irrelevant anyway.
3) He wasn’t calling Obama Hitler, he was making an analogy.
This is a stupid issue, right up there with the firing of Juan Williams from NPR.
I am the last person who likes to decry political correctness, but this is an incident that shows how nutty this has become.
He is hardly the first loud mouthed, hyper ignorant GOP supporter to show up on FOX and basically be a jackass in hating on Obama.
