DLS- Did you look at the chart that SteveK posted on that other Gonzales' thread? The one that showed that under Clinton 4 in the administration had access to Justice, but under Bush more than 400 did? That and the fact that so many justice lawyers who were not political appointees have quit or been forced out of the dept, in favor of those who were more ideologically pure- but less competent or experienced. I don't see that this resembles the Clinton years, whatever his problems were - its so much worse than that.

Reno was not Clinton's personal lawyer first, and she never gutted the dept to put in people loyal to Clinton. No one but the Limbaugh crowd thinks like that. Conservatives are coming out and complaining about what is going on at Justice. If they thought it was business as usual- why would they bother?????

> Aren’t you the least concerned
> that if Hillary wins in ‘08, the
> precedent will have been set
> for a totally politicized DOJ
> that operates at the President’s
> whim?

That's the impression Janet Reno frequently gave Americans.

I have no doubt Hillarywill politicize Justice, as she politicizes whatever she can. I find both intriguing and already alarming the prospect of her own people placed to run all the executive agencies, and when not her own people, activists even more controversial than those who were in Cabinet posts early in the first Clinton administration. (We don't want leftist activists, and we don't want more Carter retreads. You've had enough of Reagan-Bush retreads, haven't you?)

> Bush is not going to arrange
> his exit, DLS. That is why he
> issued the statement of
> support for Gonzo without
> even watching the hearings.

I see Miers and say otherwise, K. I will concede that it's possible Bush will cling hard, but it would be for another reason than the Justice Dept. scandal -- it might mean something else is being covered up or (more likely) Gonzales is in a tight "personal attorney" role, more so than how Janet Reno was toward the Clintons (failure to investigate this, or that...). I.e., Gonzales may also be Bush's effective personal attorney (which is not what his office should be used for being).

Bush is not going to arrange his exit, DLS. That is why he issued the statement of support for Gonzo without even watching the hearings. Gonzo acted like an illiterate ape, which protected Bush and Rove, just as the conveniently missing e-mails do. The weeks of intensive coaching produced the performance Bush hoped for- as it did not implicate him or Rove. The goal was to reveal as little as possible about what actually happened while appearing to cooperate-that way they could still keep up the pretense that it was an unfounded witchhunt by the Democrats.

If it comes down to your side winning or finding out the truth of what actually happened- which do you care more about?

K. Ritter said:

> How depressing that after
> Gonzo’s dismal performance
> on Thursday (with some
> calling it the worst they’ve
> ever seen) that he will
> probably survive.

Are you really surprised? Congress is waiting for Bush to arrange his exit, and soon.

Impeachment and removal are not merited here, K.

How depressing that after Gonzo's dismal performance on Thursday (with some calling it the worst they've ever seen) that he will probably survive. GOP Senators on the committee, while highly critical of his evasiveness and percieved mismanagement of the dept, appear reluctant to press for his removal, preferring to leave the decision up to Bush. Senator Specter, who was among the most critical, has taken his usual path of backing off when the time to do something controversial approaches.

Bush, of course, has already expressed his complete confidence in his friend. What a joke!
