Four large bombs exploded in mainly Shia areas of Baghdad yesterday, killing nearly 200 people, making it the deadliest day since the start eight weeks ago of the US-led ‘surge’ aimed at pacifying the capital, reports The Times.
“As firefighters doused blazing cars, angry relatives gathered chanting ‘Down with Maliki. Where is the security plan?’ in a reference to the Iraqi Prime Minister who has overseen the surge tactics. Iraqi and US soldiers on the scene were pelted with stones.
“In the past week, however, there have been several spectacular attacks on the capital, including a suicide bombing inside parliament and a powerful blast that wrecked a bridge across the Tigris river.
” ‘We’ve seen both inspiring progress and too much evidence that we still face many grave challenges,â€? Major-General William Caldwell, a US military spokesman, told reporters. “We’ve always said securing Baghdad would not be easy’.â€?
It is obvious that we have no choice but to withdraw our troops from Iraq.
As well, we need to start with congressional subpoenas regarding the “sexed-up” intelligence and false intelligence presented by the administration and cabinet regarding the invasion of Iraq in the first place. Clear and undeniable treason has been specifically committed for domestic political reasons.
Hundreds of thousands died. Justice must be served.
Another Democratic campaign commercial:
[never mind the un-PC overtones -- it's OK if Dems do it]
combine the film of the destruction and mayhem in Iraq with:
“Zip-pa-dee-doo-da, Zip-pit-tee-ay, …”
DLS- If Republicans use postive affirmation to win the PR battle yet little changes on the ground- do you believe victory is at hand? Is the rhetoric more important to you than reality? In all honesty- what will the situation be like in September- will the Iraqis have oil sharing, sectarian reconcilliation, national unity, debaathification?
Because if you can’t answer yes to the above with any type of assurance, then we are just refusing to admit reality. The same way no one was allowed to discuss a post-war plan with Rumsfeld, the same way Larry Lindsay was fired for revealing what he thought the true cost of the war would be. The same way Shinseki was marginalized after he gave a true estimate for what he believed would be the necessary troop levels to occupy Iraq. The same way no one was allowed to mention insurgency in the administration for years. The same way no one was allowed to call the violence in Baghdad a civil war.
The precursors for democracy do not exist in Iraq.
[...] Well, well, well…Is it not a crime that the corps command tolerated military excesses ??? The Commander-in-Chief George W. Bush, sitting in the safety of the White House, brazenly maintains that the situation in Iraq is ‘improving’ while hundreds of civilians are massacred every month, if not week. [...]
