That's EFFECTS, not "impacts" [sic]. G-D...Why is "impact" so ... wrongly, I'll remain nice ... misused for "affect" and "effect"? 'Cause it sounds more powerful? *scowl*

The main thing is that the liberal media is pushing gun control in the news again, naturally. More interesting is what the public might do as a result of this shooting and even how the 2008 Presidential campaign will be AFFECTED by this.

I have to say that I find it fascinating that of all of these speculations, there is no mention of what police and other first responders might do. It is their job to protect and serve. They will respond by updating their tactics and rules of engagement for active shooters and hostage situations. Smaller departments may look towards departments in larger, presumeably more dangerous cities for guidance.

I understand that we all have our own ways we choose to view society and prepare ourselves for institutional and public reactions, but let us take a moment to broaden our horizons and consider out duty to each other - especially looking to our responsibility to those who think about and deal with such problems all the time.

America is not broken. We just haven't paid enough attention to those people who keep it running.

Look for increased efforts to identify, treat, marginalize or weed out disturbed individuals from campuses and schools.
...
Distrust of foreign students. “Prejudice means “pre-judge and it shouldn’t be that way, but this will likely fan the flames of distrust in some quarters.

I too fear increased prejudice against the mentally ill and foreigners. No matter what group one groups the VT killer with, this massacre would only associate 1 in 100,000,000+ people of that group. The first two murders is probably associates to one 1 in 500,000 of the particular group. And of course, such probabilities are in the "hit by lightning" category and don't present any meaningful increase in risk over the average person.

All the reports are that "there were warning signs". But these "warning" signs apply to millions of disaffected and troubled youth under 25. Must they endure increased persecution because of one who truly turned evil? Somehow I think such treatment would actually propel more of them into demonic rage.

Lastly, in watching the coverage of the "impact" of these events on students and their families, I can only think of the traumas endured by our soldiers in Iraq and their families: The devastation from our war is 100 to 1000 times greater.
