It is their job to protect and serve. They will respond by updating their tactics and rules of engagement for active shooters and hostage situations. Smaller departments may look towards departments in larger, presumeably more dangerous cities for guidance. I understand that we all have our own ways we choose to view society and prepare ourselves for institutional and public reactions, but let us take a moment to broaden our horizons and consider out duty to each other - especially looking to our responsibility to those who think about and deal with such problems all the time. America is not broken. We just haven't paid enough attention to those people who keep it running.
