<strong>John & Jennifer Shourds Are the Problem - </strong>

I find it disgusting and revolting when individuals sieze on a tragedy to assign blame to others. I "Googled" John & Jennifer Shourds, and was amazed to see the many issues that have wronged these individuals, and their valiant efforts to assign accountability to the appropriate parties.

Mr. & Ms. Shoulds - you are part of the problem, not part of the solution. You are stellar examples of individuals with moral and ethical values that will eventually result in the collapse of this country and our society.

<strong>John and Jennifer Shourds should be ashamed of yourself</strong>

John and Jennifer Shourds state that the school president and police chief should be fired, and then go on to berate the police force. Well, Mr and Mrs Shourds how are you to pass judgement on a police force or a president when you were not there, nor do you know the whole situation, and probably do not know the least bit about a police officers training.

Well, I do. I never intended to write a disparaging email in a time of tragedy and mourning, but could not bite my tongue any longer when I saw a despicable article on MSNBC. As a police officer in the past, I thought maybe I would enlighten the public on how school shootings are handled and why it would of been so difficult to stop this killer. First, a police officer must respond and see what is going on. Once on scene, he or she will report to dispactch the situation and request backup. Once back-up arrrives, they will set up a perimeter on the building, and then wait for the SWAT team or ERT team to enter. If the situation is serious enough, regular road patrol officers will enter the building in 2 to 4 man teams and sweep the building, clearing each room or going directly towards the gunfire. In this case it appears they went towards the gunfire, and found casualties. Once the casualties were found they probably did a sweep of the building, not knowing (noone is psychic) if the gunman fled or was still there. Once the sweep was completed it is time to investigate.

The officer's probably did not believe the gunman would of gone to another building, but even if they would of known that it would of taken over 4000 officers to sweep that entire campus, and possibly they may have found them. I realize that many people are mourning right now as I am too, but hindsight is always 50/50. In this situation officers made descisions that they will live with for the rest of their life. It will not be easy to wake up knowing that they could of done something different or made an earlier connection, but it there was choices made with limited information, unlike what we have now from the media.

While on the topic of choices, I thought I would put some of my investigative skills to work. So while you call upon the firing for some key personnel, why not let the people grieve, the family, friends and students before you pass judgement. I wonder how you felt when your house was foreclosed on by South Riding Properties, did you make some bad decisions? (http://www.ccfj.net/ForeclVA.html) Or maybe we should look at your lawsuit (Chancery No. 22098) on to your excuses on not getting a piece of mail (http://inetdocs.loudoun.gov/circuitcourt/docs/letteropinions_/chancery_/ch22098shourdsv-1/ch22098shourdsv.doc), maybe we should see that you work for Hardy Building as an Asst Project Manager where you probably criticize your employees, or maybe you should of learned about voicing your opinion as they teach you in first grade "Do not speak, unless you have something good to say", which it appears on Sept. 2003 you once again voice your opinion of south riding properties of being biased. In fact, I believe you cannot think for yourself, that you must always try and think for others and then make a mockery of a situation by saying it was someone else's fault.

I do believe we need tighter gun control aimed at placing less guns in individuals' hands and monitoring and training those individuals better in whose hands the guns land.

Someone says, I can't remember here or somewhere else, that if guns can't be had a psycho will find another means e.g. bombs. This is probably not true. Not all psychos are determined or diligent or smart enough to learn bomb manufacture.

Others say one armed person might have stopped this killer. Why did that person bring a gun to school? Are we thinking law abiding citizens would just pack one for everyday life? We are only going to have one of them turn on us. Think of the moments in your daily life when you "feel like killing someone"--while driving or at the supermarket counter or whatever. If everybody packs one, every shouting or shoving match will be a latent disaster.

No more needs to be said but this on the gun issue:

"Only the names change — And the numbers," read a headline in the Times of London. "Why, we ask, do Americans continue to tolerate gun laws and a culture that seems to condemn thousands of innocents to death every year, when presumably, tougher restrictions, such as those in force in European countries, could at least reduce the number?"

The Virginia Tech tragedy brings to mind a similar school shooting in 1979 California. 16 year old Brenda Spencer wounded nine and killed two in a shooting spree at an elementary school. She said, "I had no reason for it, and it was just a lot of fun," "It was just like shooting ducks in a pond," and "(The children) looked like a herd of cows standing around, it was really easy pickings."

> It’s a litigation happy culture

It's going to be a fiesta, amigos -- the gun manufacturer (junk lawsuit, bogus grounds), the gun store (also junk lawsuit), the university, the police for not responding quickly enough and with enough force...Bush and Cheney if any student is a Chomskyite (ha, ha)

Cho went out and premeditated these murders by purchasing weapons on March 13 and sometime last week. ....a full month in advance of his rampage. Outlawing weapons would solve this? I would suggest that this persistant, depressed individual would only create an alternate plan. Would a bomb have been more satisfactory? THEN who would we blame???? NO ONE is to blame here except for Cho. I'm sorry his treatment was not adequate for his condition. Perhaps an inadequate health care system in the U.S. was to blame????

The WaPo and other news sources have the story about another hero. This one survived the Holocaust and gave his life to save his students.

<blockquote>JERUSALEM -- The e-mails from grateful students arrived soon after Liviu Librescu was shot to death, telling how the Holocaust survivor barricaded the doorway of his Virginia Tech classroom and saved their lives at the cost of his own.

Librescu, an Israeli engineering and math lecturer who survived the Nazi killings and later escaped from Communist Romania, was one of several foreign victims of Monday's shootings, which coincided with Israel's Holocaust remembrance day.

Romanian university staff walk by a makeshift memorial for Romanian-born Liviu Librescu, 76, an engineering science and mathematics professor at Virginia Tech, who was killed in the Monday morning Virginia Tech massacre, in Bucharest Tuesday April 17, 2007. Librescu, 76 (born 18 August 1930 the university said), was born in the southern city of Ploiesti and emigrated to Israel in 1978 and later moved to the United States, and received U.S. citizenship.

"My father blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee," Librescu's son, Joe Librescu, said Tuesday in a telephone interview from his home outside Tel Aviv. "Students started opening windows and jumping out."</blockquote>

Instead of showing the killer, why not the first victim and a hero - Robert "Stack'' Clark. If someone had the courage of Clark the death toll at the acedemic hall may not have been so high.

<blockquote>The ultimate in the culture of victimization</blockquote>

Actually I think if you want something that exemplifies a less than flattering part of American culture more it's better to look at:
<blockquote>This is likely going to feed a firestorm brewing among parents and students who are furious that they weren’t warned by the college administration. And it’s likely to provide a field day for attorneys.</blockquote>

It's a litigation happy culture. So the university should have locked down the thousands of students, teachers and other staff owing to one murder, that showed no particular sign of going further. And if they had? That would have prevented the massacre? Yes, lock down in the dorms....where this guy went to get better armed. Perfect, you lock kids up with a fully armed psycho...and then you can sue the pants off the university for it ANYWAY.

Frankly, you can "what if" the situation to death. My own what if would start with "what if he didn't have such easy access to firearms", but, for reasons that utterly escape me (and most of my fellow Europeans) this isn't a popular notion in the US. Barring further revelations of gross negligence one the REAL massacre was on, it doesn't look like the university committed any unforgivable sins.

Actually I think if you want something that exemplifies a less than flattering part of American culture more it’s better to look at:

This is likely going to feed a firestorm brewing among parents and students who are furious that they weren’t warned by the college administration. And it’s likely to provide a field day for attorneys.

It’s a litigation happy culture. So the university should have locked down the thousands of students, teachers and other staff owing to one murder, that showed no particular sign of going further. And if they had? That would have prevented the massacre? Yes, lock down in the dorms….where this guy went to get better armed. Perfect, you lock kids up with a fully armed psycho…and then you can sue the pants off the university for it ANYWAY.

Frankly, you can “what if” the situation to death. My own what if would start with “what if he didn’t have such easy access to firearms”, but, for reasons that utterly escape me (and most of my fellow Europeans) this isn’t a popular notion in the US. Barring further revelations of gross negligence one the REAL massacre was on, it doesn’t look like the university committed any unforgivable sins.
