Nouf, I read the Atlantic article and although it said we've beaten al-qaeda down quite a bit and don't need a new war, he explicitly says that everyone he talked to says we can't just walk from Iraq at this time. It is a very interesting article. Thanks for pointing it out.

Come on, Mike. Pelosi's trip to Syria is not inconsequential. Bush has no credibility. It is now politically tenable to usurp the President's powers. Still, it's important to respect the office of President even if you don't respect the man.

Regarding the content of Shaun's post, there's an interesting article in The Atlantic from last autumn:

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200609/fallows_victory/5

It's by James Fallows, a former Carter speech writer. Not exactly a right wing nut. He argues that we've basically won against Al-Qaeda & that it's time to move on. Both sides of the aisle are guilty of lionizing AQ. The Left does it to highlight Bush's incompetence. The right does it to whip up support for the fight.

I think that is one of the most disturbing things to me about he Right blogosphere - the constant grasping at ever-shorter straws to justify everything that this administration has wreaked on this, and other nations. Reality be damned.

100 Iraqis and ten US servicemenbers killed? "Hey, look over here at those 'Flying Imams' trying to bring down the nation!!!!!"

Secret prisons, torture and rendition to Eastern Europe and Syria? "Hey, look over there - Commie traitor Dhimmicrat Pelosi is negotiating with our mortal enemies so that our government will be reconstituted under Sharia law!!!!"

And on it goes. It's pathetic, of course, but it's also a deeply disturbing insight into the mindset of some of my fellow Americans as well.
