Gen Musharraf Refuses US Military Help

general_musharraf.jpg

President General Pervez Musharraf has rejected ‘absolutely and totally’ the prospect of a joint US-Pakistan military operation to pursue retreating insurgents inside Pakistan, reports The Pakistan Tribune.

” ‘The whole population of Pakistan will rise against it,’ he told CBS news channel in an interview.”

Is General Musharraf telling the truth…or is it the usual bluff and bluster?

In my earlier post I had mentioned that the Bush administration has been saying that “the US forces have been conducting hot pursuit of terrorists into Pakistani territory and will continue to do so if circumstances demand it.

“Dropping all concern for Pakistani sensitivities and any pretence of shielding General Musharraf from a domestic backlash on the issue, a high-ranking US military official told a Senate committee that American forces on Afghanistan’s eastern border routinely fire upon and pursue Taliban enemies into Pakistan.

‘We have all the authorities we need to pursue, either with artillery fire or on the ground, across the border,’ Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

“Pakistan had insisted to date that no foreign forces would be allowed to violate its territory. For more please click here...

Meanwhile General Musharraf said on Friday that Pakistan wants to consolidate its relations with the Russian Federation and to open up new areas of collaboration, reports Pakistan Links.

“The Russian prime minister Mikhail E Fradkov said that Pakistan enjoyed an important place in Russia’s foreign policy. He said that Russia deeply appreciated Pakistan’s endeavours towards peace, amity and prosperity in the region.

“He said he hoped that his visit, the first by a Russian prime minister in 38 years, would go a long way towards improving relations between Russia and Pakistan. He also delivered a written message from President Vladimir Putin to President Musharraf.”

Russia will build new railwaiy lines in Pakistan, including those going toward Iran, says another news report.

  1. “Absolutely and totally”: most lawyers would tell you that he’s probably lying / bluffing.

  2. Nobody says:

Not sure what point your making but pursuing the fleeing Taliban unilaterally without the aid of Pakistani troops is very different then engaging in JOINT operations.

The biggest blunder in USA Foreign policy is not forging strong ties with Russia and helping them with their terrorist issues while maintaining the lefts Human rights violation bullpuckey.

Now we have a Russia moving back towards Communism because among other things their fear of Muslims overwhelming them and a once again every growing loggerheads with the west and especially the USA.

This transpired under Clinton, and continued probably even more so under Bush. Combined Clinton and Bush have totally dropped the ball on Russia.

Now we have a Russia that is going to be majority Muslim by 2050 and their miltary will be majority Muslim by 2015 turning towards strengthened relations with Muslim nations while defying the USA in the global war on terror. It most definitely is a hard war and at times makes one want to throw up their hands but that just cant be done. For our Grandchildrens sake.

  3. [...] Pervez Musharraf has unequivocally stated that Pakistan will not allow US forces to operate in Pakistani territory, not in joint patrols or for any other reason. This conflicts with the more blunt assertion from the US, which noted that American forces will follow retreating Taliban and al-Qaeda forces across the Afghanistan border in “hot pursuit” cases (via TMV): President General Pervez Musharraf has rejected “absolutely and totally” the prospect of a joint US-Pakistan military operation to pursue retreating insurgents inside Pakistan. 4. [...] Pakistan doesn’t want to fight the terrorists.  Pakistan won’t allow the United States to fight terrorists on its territory alone.  Or together.  You wonder which country  supports terrorists. And which is an ally in the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban.   And which country has nukes.  We worry about which countries have nukes and what’s volatile and everybody forgets about Pakistan.  And India.  Oy. [...]

  5. DLS says:

Many in Pakistan’s government are friends of the terrorists. We (USA) are simply not going to do well with Musharraf and will probably do worse with whoever succeeds him someday. That’s not our fault, either; we’re simply facing some bad people who are zealous as well as violent. The same is true in Saudi Arabia and the nation I worry about a lot, Egypt (while most watch the Saudis). The current Saudi leadership is less friendly to the West than the earlier leadership, and even the predecessors were often bad. Things could be much worse someday.

    > Combined Clinton and Bush have totally dropped the ball on Russia.

I disagree. Russia mainly has imploded (fallen apart within, reverting to authoritarian and even totalitarian and criminal government — the government there s the biggest, best-armed mafiya) and that is not Clinton or Bush’s fault.

DLS I usually dont disagree with a lot of what you post but your dropping the ball here. This Implosion which I agree with is a result of the USA dropping the ball. Moving in with lots of foreign investment. Franchising Mcdonalds, Wendys, Oil companies at the risk of nationalization but certainly to prevent the need to turn to crime because of a nation that has no national identity anymore.

This so called implosion could have very easily been alleviated by the entire west investing in Russias future. Instead we hesitated at every turn and constantly told them you have to meet certain human rights criteria or else we wont do x or y or z.

We dropped the ball. Both Socially and Politically. The morass looked so overwhelming that it was easier to just look the other way and pretend it did not exist. Thats what we did and now we have a Russia turning to Muslim faith to fill 80 years of communist Godlessness.

That was a real risk and it has happened.

Plus what did we really know how Russia would be like after 1990? Look at Iraq.

I believe they still have that identity (exemplified in some quite sinister ways by Putin’s latest moves and by the far right there).

As opposed to when we helped Hussein against Iran and we chose not to care?

All of Russia, or only some parts?
