Joe said:
some producers view the clips as a way to promote shows which I most certainly think this clip does…

Yes, YouTube has been a boom for promotion...I particularly enjoy some of the early comedy clips you post here...the one with the Stooges as studio executives a few weeks back was great.

Such works are part of our collective heritage, I feel. I just don't understand the mentality of asserting property rights to everything...even low-res YouTube videos...when the public interest is involved.

Of course, under the DMCA, were I too download a single music track illegally I would be facing greater potential jail time than if I went to NYC and beat down two of New York's finest cops with a baseball bat.

Blogs all over the internet use you tubes. I access what you tube has up there and a lot of the stuff they are ordered to take down. I know Viacom and others have ordered them take things down and also if I see a clip from a show that has been under dispute, I don't use it. As you note, Marlowe, some producers view the clips as a way to promote shows which I most certainly think this clip does....since The Simpsons has proven to be on of the cartoon satire genius works of our time. (I am also a fan of Family Guy which the critics don't like as much)

That was a nice clip, Joe.

Your referencing all these YouTube clips - particularly of early comedy gems - raises the whole debate over copyright.

I think YouTube promotes shows, and allows people to access material - as you have done for folks here - that we would never know about otherwise.

Yet some (e.g., RIAA, MPAA) would say you & YouTube are promoting piracy and intellectual theft.

Do corporate property rights trump the right of the people to their cultural heritage?
