Iraq & The Mysterious Dropping Death Tolls

As noted here earlier today, the original death toll for the suicide bombing outside the Iraqi Parliament was eight but has been revised downward to one by U.S. authorities.

Now the original death toll for the tanker truck bomb blast on the heavily traveled Sarafiya Bridge across the Tigris has been revised downward from six to one by those same ubiquitous authorities.

The new math for the blast in the heart of the Green Zone is especially curious since two Sunni members of Parliament — Mohammed Awad and Taha al-Liheibi – were identified as among the dead.

Notes Sarabeth at the 1115 blog:

Apparently Mohammed Awad has stayed dead. Which presumably means that Taha al-Liheibi is miraculously risen from the dead. What is not known is whether any plans are afoot to found a new religion around him.

On second thought, there’s nothing strange about this. After all, an administration that can lose five million or so emails needs to be cut some slack when it comes to a mere handful of dead Iraqis.

    This is terrible.
I just laughed about news from Iraq! The bend to go around is getting nearer.

That’s nothing, friend. I was drinking water when I read Sarabeth’s comment and I laughed so hard that it shot through my nose and onto my Cabela’s safari jacket and matching cargo pants.

    Shaun-

That’s two belly laughs in one morning for me.
    Life is grand, ain’t it?

Given the fact that death tolls are almost always estimated too high initially for these types of events (go back and look at 9/11, for instance), because people unaccounted for are assumed dead until located, why does this have to be something ‘mysterious’?

Not everything is a conspiracy, however fun it is to think they are.

    Because it’s Friday afternoon.
