Celebrities Who Look Like Historical Figures

A fascinating link from one of my longtime favorite sites Barcepundit.

GO HERE to see how some of the celebrities of our time (and recent times) look just like historical figures. A picture is worth a thousand words (and a good thing because this post is actually in Spanish).

This is totally off topic. However, as an American living overseas, I am continually surprised at the lack of coverage of important stories by American news outlets. A good example of this is the current famine in Africa’s Horn, where millions are threatened with starvation. The BBC has excellent coverage on their website, including this story talking of mothers having to abandoned babies on long treks to refugee camps.

I checked CNN.com, CBSNews.com and FoxNews.com and found NOTHING about this. If I were an African and someone told me that Americans were “racist,” this fact alone would seem to add credence to the sentiment.

Are we just “compassion fatigued” and turning in our ourselves as a country during hard economic times? Surely this topic merits some mention on TMV.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

  2. This has been a problem for many years. I lived about 2 years total in India and about four in Spain. Papers overseas always tend to have more coverage while American papers get bogged down almost entirely in the American political horserace or a limited number of foreign stories. All American news organizations have made this worse in recent years by cutbacks. I’m always swamped on TMV but you will note that I try to do some foreign posts and will be increasingly the number in coming months and years. Interest by editors is what determines our stories..and editors always say they are reflecting readers’ interest. But so many interesting foreigns stories (including those on foreign politics) don’t appear in many papers. When I was overseas I listened to the BBC World Service, read local papers and especially liked the International Herald Tribune.

Google news. If the story is interesting, check a couple of different viewpoints. You might find an African aggregater, the Tehran times, or a Chinese newspaper, but it never hurts to see what others think.

As this appears to be an ‘open thread’ I’d like to ask why my comments in other threads are now “awaiting moderation”… Just askin’

PS – A regular “open thread’ on a regular basis would be… very nice.
