don’t like imus, glad he is fired, but where does this leave free speech?

read an interesting column, before the cbs announcement.

    http://joeleonardi.wordpress.com/2007/04/12/the-meek-spineless-national-broadcasting-corporation-msnbc/

  2. Lynx says:

The day before his comments, I had no idea who he was. When I read the comments I thought he was a jerk, but now the hysterical overreaction to the comments makes me feel sorry for him. He’s no longer the bad guy, in my book. Doesn’t make him a good guy, but this has gone from bad to silly to outrageous at a stunning rate.

I demand that every radio host that’s made a misogynistic remark be fired intermediately. Sure, that would leave the halls of Rap radio stations virtually deserted but we must stand on principle, like MSNBC!

    Ugh.

  3. sock hop says:

Sick. CBS is a bunch of pathetic pussies. Do any of these people who are piling on Imus actually watch the show and understand what it is all about? He’s been bashing and making fun of everyone for 30 years. His recent remark is mild compared with about 100 others I can think of. If his behavior is so outrageous why hasn’t he been called for it before now? Wouldn’t a suspension be appropriate for a first-time offense? (And that’s what this is, a first time offense since he hasn’t been called out before.)

  4. Lynx says:

Excuse me, I should say CBS, not MSNBC, I get my acronyms mixed. It also doesn’t help that most stations are virtually identical in their utter lack of spine.

  5. I think Imus has been called out more than a few times before.

  6. Mari says:

Have been listening to Imus for years. He has become increasingly conservative. Didn’t like some of his comments, but he has a natural sense of humor. I certainly don’t believe that his comments about the Rutgers team were meant to be taken seriously. I wish him well.

  7. superdestroyer says:

Will NBC and CBS fire the first black personality that does something stupid or will they apply a double standard? If Isaiah Washington used the term “faggot” today instead of a few months ago, would he still have a job or would the networks feel that they have to fire anyone who make a bigoted slur?

  8. Martin says:

Thanks a lot Rev. Al and Jesse; Imus got fired in the middle of his long-running and extremely successful radiothon for various children’s charities, which brings in millions each year. You have probably succeeded in killing some kids now that Imus can’t do the radiothon tomorrow.

I’d call for a boycott of these two bozos but neither one seems to have a real job!

  9. Lynx: I agree completely with your comment. I never heard of the dude either, never watched his show, did some reading, etc. and… I actually feel sorry for him.

This is ridiculous. It’s a Hetze.

  10. sock hop says:

Holly: “I think Imus has been called out more than a few times before.”

But he’s never been sanctioned before. If you tolerate someones behavior over a long period of time, then decide not to tolerate it, you don’t apply the death penalty in the first sanction. Suspend him two week. Firing him defies any sense of proportionality.

  11. O, and now they will go after every person who made a ‘bigoted’ remark, which will mean that, yes, political correctness will rule even more. Congratulations America! Well done!

  12. that should be “makes” a bigoted remark.

I also wonder, like some other people whether they will only go after caucasians or whether they will now also go after minorities (probably not).

And even if they do: they’d still be wrong.

Quite a sad state of affairs this.

  13. Michael, what’s a Hetze?

  14. sammi says:

I am not a fan of Imus at all, but I am on his side. There is such a hugh double standard in this country. I do not think he meant any harm to anybody, that’s just who he is and who he make his living. He apologized constantly for days and that did not satisfy. When black comics make blantant racial jokes about white people, white people don’t go crying and complaining. You just take it from where it comes, it was made as a joke and move on. You can not take everything people say so serious. We are becoming a country where free speech is no longer one of our freedoms, you must give that up at the door when you come in.

  15. superdestroyer says:

    Michael,

I would say that one of the effects is that no Democratic candidate can be seen anywhere near a rap/hip hop star now. Any performers who has ever used insulting terms for women and others will have to be avoided for candidates like Obama will come off as the worst kind of hypocrite.

  16. SteveK says:

    superdestroyer Says:
I would say that one of the effects is that no Democratic candidate can be seen anywhere near a rap/hip hop star now.

Are you implying that the Democratic candidates are now on equal ground with Republican candidates; or, that Republican candidates can/and will continue hanging with rap/hip hop stars; or are you just dissapointed that no one has made a Democrat / Republican ‘thing’ yet?

  17. Matilda Plews says:

Imus had it right: nappy headed hos. The whole bunch of them.

  18. mICAT72 says:

THE REMARKS WERE DIRECTED AT TEENAGERS(KIDS). YOU CANT GET MORE INAPPROPRIATE THAN THAT. I DONT CALL ANYONE THE “N” WORD AND DO NOT CONDONE IT HOWEVER, I MUST SAY I UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOMEONE IN HIP HOP SAYING IT VERSUS ONE OF THE “GOOD OLE BOYS”. WHITE HIP HOPPERS USE THE TERM TOO. IT IS A CASE OF MY FAT FRIENDS CAN CALL ME FAT BUT, NOT MY SKINNY FRIENDS. NO ONE HAS TO AGREE WITH MY LOGIC BUT, YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE. ALSO RAPPERS ARE SPEAKING IN GENERAL TERMS, IMUS WAS SPECIFIC. EXAMPLE, I HAVE HEARD WHITE PEOPLE SAYING BLACK PEOPLE SMELL MUSTY, I WASNT OFFENDED, IT WAS A GENERAL STATEMENT. HAD THEY SAID “YOU SMELL LIKE MUST” I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN. JJ WAS WRONG FOR THE HYMIE TOWN REMARKS, WE ALL KNOW THAT. SO EXCUSE EVERYONE’S WRONG DOING? NO, PERHAPS SOMEONE FROM THE JEWISH COMMUNITY NEEDS TO MEET WITH HIM(JJ) AND INFORM HIM HE SHOULD MAKE AMENDS. ANYWAY BACK TO IMUS, HE DEFINITELY WAS NOT JOKING AS MANY ARE SAYING. I HAVE HEARD SEVERAL WHITE COMEDIANS ALONG WITH BLACK AND HISPANIC, RACE BASHING AND FOUND IT QUITE COMICAL, THIS WAS NOT ONE OF THOSE CASES. I RESPECT THE MAN THOUGH. IN AN INTERVIEW THIS MORINING HE SAID “HEY I’VE BEEN DISHING IT OUT ALL THESE YEARS, NOW IT’S TIME FOR ME TO TAKE IT”. I REALLY RESPECT HIM FOR THAT. I CANT STAND THE ROSIE’S WHO BASH EVERYONE AND BECOME VICTIM WHEN THEY RETALIATE. I AM MOST OFFENDED BY THE HO REMARK. I’M HAPPY TO BE NAPPY. AS A YOUNG TEENAGE GIRL YOU ARE ALL READY DEALING WITH MAJOR SELF ESTEEM ISSUES. EVEN WITH PARENTS REINFORCING YOUR WORTH, IT DOESNT MATTER, YOU DO CARE WHAT THE WORLD PERCEIVES YOU TO BE. AND TO KNOW THEY SEE YOU AS SOME NAPPY HAIRED HO’S? TOO MUCH. I WOULD FEEL THE SAME IF THEY WERE AN ALL WHITE TEAM(MINUS TWO) AND COMMENTS WERE MADE ABOUT THEM. THEY ARE KIDS.

  19. nicrivera says:

“It’s not about taking Imus down, Sharpton said. “It’s about lifting decency up.

Kind of ironic, coming from Sharpton, given his own history of making false accusations of racism and insensitive remarks.

  20. nicrivera says:

    Matilda,

This isn’t a hate site. I suggest you take your racist garbage elsewhere.

  21. mICAT72 says:

THX NICRIVERA. I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DISAGREE TOOTH AND NAIL BUT THAT IS NOT NECESSARY.

  22. Matilda Plews says:

    mICAT72:
    1. Lose the caps.
    2. Ten years ago, when my five year old son called my 8 year old daughter a “ho”, and she called him a “double ho” and he called her a “triple ho”, and so on, and I heard it all (and we’re white) – that’s when I knew that “ho” had lost any meaning it may have had previously.
    3. “He definitely was not joking” you say? You’ve never seen the show, have you? There isn’t any time when he’s not joking.
    4. “Rappers are speaking in general terms. Imus was specific.” Huh?
    5. “Happy to be nappy.” Good line!

  23. tom wint says:

Don Imus has made a remarkable differance on the lives many people, War vetrans sick kids and yes even listeners.I beleave he is a good decent honest careing man.I for one will make it my business to search out the sponcer who desserted him along with CBS and NBS and to boycott them

  24. mICAT72 says:

I GUESS I HAVE A DUMB QUESTION. WHY ARE PEOPLE SO OPPOSED TO PC? I DON’T WANT TO OFFEND ANYONE. AND I WOULD LIKE THE SAME IN RETURN. WHY IS IT WRONG FOR ME TO NOT WANT TO HURT ANYONE?

  25. Matilda Plews says:

    mICAT72:
Because it is impossible to say virtually anything of substance (much less controversial) and certainly anything humorous, without offending someone. If we go through our lives trying to offend nobody, our lives will be a big waste of time.

  26. mICAT72: It’s not all bad but some stuff goes WAY too far.

  27. Gianni says:

    IMUS OUTRAGE!!

I am in total disbelief that Don Imus has been terminated from his position at CBS Radio due to his comments. This is totally ludicrous! Four out of the CURRENT top ten rap songs include the words ‘ho’ in the context of degrading women. All of the other 6 songs degrade women as well. This is still allowed on our airwaves and on the music award shows that are broadcast on the very networks that fire Imus!

There are several books published that have “nappy-headed” in their title and refer to blacks. These are still being sold! I don’t see anyone cry about this.

Here is a quote from Al Sharpton himself:
Sharpton said the airways should not be used to “call children hard-core hos, nappy-headed hos. … None of us have the right to use the public airways to express our bigotry.”

Yet BET, and several “black” radio stations constantly use the terms he mentioned nobody has the right to say.

Bruce Gordon, a member of CBS Corp.’s board of directors, also said he wanted Imus fired from CBS Radio.

Speaking Thursday on CNN’s “American Morning,” Gordon said that, speaking “as an African-American man in this country, Don Imus violated our community. He attacked beautiful, talented, classy women and when those women showed themselves to the country, I think that those words matched with those images made it clear to America that Don Imus was wrong.”

How about all the Black artists that created these words and continually violate women daily in their lyrics???

Whoopi Goldberg’s production company is called One HO Productions.

Any minute now, black people will resume calling themselves bitches and hos and the N-word and in the ultimate sign of hypocrisy, neither Rutgers nor anyone else will call a news conference about that.

Where did an old white guy like Imus learn the word “ho”?

Was that always part of his vocabulary? Or did he borrow it from Jay-Z and Dave Chappelle and Snoop Dogg?

People should walk around the playground at the elementary and high schools today and listen to how young black people speak to each other, treat each other and tease each other. Next, sample some of their CDs and look at the video games they’re playing. And while you’re at it, blame yourself for funding this garbage, for allowing your kids to support these companies and for not taking a stand against it or the so-called artists making it happen.

It seems to be here that there is freedom of speech based on RACE. I am sick and tired of the self-proclaimed leader Al Sharpton and his fellow cronies single out white people for ludicrous comments that have been originating from blacks!!! I don’t see Mr. Al holding a press conference about Dave Chappelle television show, or Jay-Z’s “women demeaning” lyrics.

  28. Keith says:

I think people that can’t laugh at them namely whoever started this probably al and the jesse and the NAACP should just go way in my opinion since they can’t laugh at themselves and they divided this great courtry instead of help it. so i think their the ones that should retire instead. remember this is american and we can say anything we want ( free speech) , so lighten up people those who get offended easily should get a life move on and if you do’nt like a certain program guess what. it’s your right to change the channel, this free society after all, i don’t like howard stern but that does’nt mean i throw a stink about it like this imus deal, shame on the double standard black leaders it not like their god ,their people like you and me with faults and should clean up their own backyard first. i can’t believe the networks ran like scared little puppies and did’nt stand by imus. i don’t agree with everything don says but he as an american has that right and nobody can take that away. he has been making fun of people for years so why now are people are so sensitive? they say they can take a joke, i guess they can’t what hypocrites. what is a nappy headed ho anway? sounds made up like somebody mix up words and through them together and you guys should really lighten up and take life in stride. peace. this is 21st century after all.
long live imus the great i-man i hope some network or whatever has the balls or guts to hire him they won’t be sorry he’s great .

  29. mountaintop says:

ok, sd, have u perhaps never listened to howard stern? he’s been around for a while. he does not care what he say or who its about. and i cant get enuff.

  30. mICAT72 says:

GIANNA, YOU MAY NOT BE AWARE BUT, AN OLD WHITE MAN LIKE IMUS MOST LIKELY HAS KNOWN SINCE HE WAS A YOUNG BUCK WHAT A HO WAS. THESE NEGATIVES HAVE BEEN PERPETUATED BY WHITES FOR SEVERAL YEARS TOWARD BLACKS. IT IS NOW THAT SOME HAVE DECIDED TO RECLAIM THEM. BLACK PEOPLE DID NOT MAKE UP NAPPY, THIS IS WHAT WE WERE TOLD OUR HAIR IS. NOR DID HO ORIGINATE WITH US. ANY COMMENTS REPLYING TO THIS COMMENT ARE POINTLESS BECAUSE I AM NOT COMING BACK TO THIS PAGE. I DID NOT KNOW I WAS IN THE GOOD OLE BOYS NECK OF THE WOODS. AND BEFORE I GO, MATILDA, DO YOU NOT SEE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR CHILDREN USING SUCH LANGUAGE. JEESH, MAKES ME SHUDDER!! GOD SPEED TO ALL

  31. dr.e says:

MlCAT72, just my two cent’s worth; ‘politically correct’ is a term that has its place, but also is used by a few when seeming to try to shame others who don’t agree with them into silence; a true dramatic irony. It is not ‘politically correct’ to hold the value of caring for others and to say what you have to say in terms and in ways that do not cause wound or bloodshed… unless it’s a matter of real life and death.

Holding the value of trying to do least harm, rather than being purposely reckless with words and actions, is an ancient ideal; one that most leaders we hallow, strive toward. Reason? To say or act recklessly or without thought, often sets off conflagrations with others. We can all see how war saps creative life, undercuts innovations and thieves all time and resource, and instead leaves us with anger and ashes, which after the first burn-off are pretty much interchangeable. I’d say your principle is “Do unto others…” Personally, though most of us are imperfect at it, I think it’s a fine goal.

also Holly, thank you for posting this topic and again, just my 2 cents worth about that matter: I think it would elucidate a lot for many of us if we could know exactly how the corporate decision was made to withdraw or break what likely would have been a written legal document spelling out Mr. Imus’ two-week probation. Can such a serious a priori agreement really just be set aside like that…

This sudden about-face in what seemed an executed probationary process, leads me to wonder if irony and fact are one: that the very reason Mr. Imus was hired, may also be the real reason he was let go. If ‘the big M’ was the bottom line in hiring him, and if ‘the big M’ was subsequently threatened… then letting Mr. Imus go may have had little to do with corporate’s liking or disliking of the timbre or aim of his speech.
    dr. e

  32. joe gandelman says:

Yes, Matilda. We don’t really like comments like that here. Please read the guidelines below. If it happens again we delete the comment; if it becomes a habit we wind up having to ban people. We don’t mind very spirited discussion and don’t want a “thought police” censoring views that even disagree with our posts. But we do hope people use common sense and if they don’t, then we conclude we’ll do it for them and for our site. JG

  33. dr.e says:

and, the fundraiser that I think was promised to Mr. Imus to run on air, was also cancelled. I’d like to hear corporate’s reasoning.

  34. SICK AND TIRED OF RACIST BOZOS!! says:

Is a sad day for America , when we allow two of the most racist and hate-filled instigators in recent times stir us up in such a manner. What I am waiting for now is the date, that Al Sharpton , and Jesse Jackson plan on boycotting C B S records for the explicit use of racist and sexist remarks, by some of their artists, but I know that won’t happen, because black rappers, and comedians have special privileges, when a rapper goes on to describe how he makes his crack-head hoe give him a blowjob for a piece of cheese, he is only describing the reality that he tragically suffered by growing up in a project. And when he describes in detail, how he emptied his clip into another human being — don’t distress, that is only a metaphor , and he is only perpetuating the pain and suffering that he has suffered at the hands of white AMERICA!!! While I personally don’t agree with the comments that Imus expressed last week I believe he has gone above and beyond to repair the situation . I also wanted to post the following question — When is Jesse Jackson , a known racist and adulterer, and his bigot friend Al Sharpton gonna make amends, to the Jewish , and Hispanic communities for the repeated verbal assaults in the past.BTW When will their fund raisers start to replace the Imus Radiothon ?

  35. T-Steel says:

A pure money decision in my book. Jackson and Sharpton are bona fide shakedown artists. The good thing about Imus being fired is that they won’t get any money from the “white folk shakedown”.

Either way and from any mouth, I abhor the word ho.

  36. Uncle Joe Mccarthy says:

imus’ termination has nothing to do with the loss of free speech

there is no free speech on the public airwaves…that is why they are regulated

where was imus when howard stern was getting fined millions, or having stations pull his programing?

and trust me…it wasnt imus’ original on air comments that got him fired…it was his bs apologies, and his non contrite appearance with that hack sharpton

come on…when he finally became aware of his termination, he couldnt stop ragging on sharpton

bitter old men dont belong on the radio…they belong on some park bench feeding the pigeons

  37. Matilda Plews says:

    mICAT72:
“AN OLD WHITE MAN LIKE IMUS MOST LIKELY HAS KNOWN SINCE HE WAS A YOUNG BUCK WHAT A HO WAS.”

I don’t even know anymore what it means. Is it slang for “whore”? It used to mean that, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be used in that sense anymore. What do you think it means?

(Once again, dear, please lose the caps. Hit the caps lock button.)

  38. Alphonso Soriano says:

    Uncle Joe Mccarthy:
“where was imus when howard stern was getting fined millions, or having stations pull his programing?”

Imus was supporting Stern all the way on that, even though they were bitter enemies.

(I feel like most of the people supporting the firing never listened to or watched the show.)

  39. Mari says:

I looked up the word “nap” in the dictionary and it says “soft fuzzy surface”. Supposedly this is offensive to some people and got Imus fired. I have found some of Imus’s previous comments offensive, but I spend a lot of time trying to get my hair “soft” and relatively “fuzzy” so I feel that picking apart words that are offiensive to some people and not to others another form of chaos.

  40. Clint Courntey says:

Right, Mari, And to reinforce that, CAT72, a teenage black girls, said
“I’M HAPPY TO BE NAPPY”. So how offensive to black folks can it be?

  41. Coot Veal says:

“When is Jesse Jackson , a known racist and adulterer, and his bigot friend Al Sharpton … ”

Two aging men who never had a legitimate job in their lives!

  42. Uncle Joe Mccarthy says:

    Alphonso Soriano.

funny, i have a different recollection of history than you do. when howard was originally fired from wnbc, imus was uncharacteristically silent (unlike his colleagues on wfan in regards his termination)

when the fcc was coming down hard on stern, i really dont recall imus saying anything….and i was in nyc at the time

but if you have a link to those comments it would be appreciated

imus became a liability to nbc and cbs when major advertisers pulled their spots…and they werent coming back

this was a money decision, not one based on morality

  43. mountaintop says:

clint courtney, are u really so stupid that u do not understand that it is the person’s intent when they say certain things. yes i too am “happy to be nappy” but that does not mean someone should be able to use that as a deragatory remark towards me. i am also what america considers to be overweight for my height and i am happy, does this mean i want someone calling me fat ass? sure my friends do so in a lighthearted manner, not with malice. as i stated before u moron, its the intent.

  44. Coot Veal says:

Mountaintop – you ARE a fat ass. Go back and read the “happy …” quote in context. YOU’RE the one who’s a moron.

  45. mountaintop says:

oooh, someone i dont know on the computer called me a fat ass. im so offended. grow up u imbecile. i am black idiot,i know what the f*ck happy to be nappy means. neanderthal in its truest form yes its you cool veal. and if u know ur history u know u cant dispute it (u being neanderthal).

  46. Coot Veal says:

Mr. Mountaintop, you brought that on yourself. You called Clint Courtney “stupid” and a “moron”. There was no call for that.

So what does “happy to be nappy” really mean? Enlighten us, please.

  47. Keith says:

This guy Jason Whitlock makes alot of sense, maybe he should be in charge of civil stuff other than the two boneheads mentioned before. he actually pretty levelheaded. watch this clip and think about it really does make sense .

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CCS7kTLUZM&mode=related&search=

you don’t have be offended by what person says you know who you are that’s what basketball team should’ve thought about before acting, like that old saying which is true. sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. that what they should’ve done just let it slide.

  48. mountaintop says:

well cool veal if i brought it on myself oh well, i dont care. once again i dont care what someone on the computer thinks about me. keith, maybe words dont hurt you, but most people are hurt by words more than sticks and stones. why should they let it slide? i think we let too much slide all ready. why do the victims have to be “the bigger person?”. as the victims they can take whatever stance they choose.

  49. mountaintop says:

and also cool veal since u r the self proclaimed “public defender” y r u sticking up for clint courtney but, have nothing to say in regards to matilda’s comments? hmmmmm
