THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED. I THINK THAT IMUS MADE A STUPID COMMENT. BUT WAIT WHAT HOST HASN’T STERN– LIMBAUGH– BUSH— KERRY SHOULD I GO ON!!!!! I THINK MSNBC LOST THEIR GUTS, AND DEFINETELY ME AS A VIEWER. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR RATINGS. IMUS HAS CALLED HIS OWN WIFE WHO HE LOVES A HO GET OVER IT.
Who gives al sharpton this power? This from a man who served no jail time whatsoever for incitement to riot, which lead to the killing of Yankel Rosenbaum, other incidents where sharpton’s incitement lead to the burning down of a business resulting in a number of deaths. And of course the tawana brawley hoax.
This only goes to show that its futile to apologize. In spite of all the groveling Imus did, to the team, to sharpton, he has been taken off the air anyway. I’m not a fan of Imus, I don’t listen to his show, however what has been done to him is chilling. These were only words, nobody was physically harmed as a result of what Imus said, unlike the actions of al sharpton.
Furthermore, I don’t really buy into the melodramatic claims of some of the members of the Rutgers women’s basketball team about being “scarred for life”. If this is the worst thing that has ever happened to them in their lives, they have lived very charmed lives indeed.
Obviously these girls are playing this up for all it’s worth. This hypersensitivity going on in our society is getting out of hand. If these girls are so bent out of shape from being called names by some shmuck on the radio, how do they handle the real pressures of life, such as college and what they will have to face in the future? I suspect they weren’t as “scarred” by Imus’ words as they claimed to be.
All I’ll say, as stupid and wrong as I am 99 percent of the time, is this:
I grew up on sticks and stones. This is more of a public stoning.
It doesn’t make what he did right. But everyone’s doing everything for the wrong reasons. Imus is gonna get fired not for what he said, but the heat that he’s getting in the national press and the bad PR. The press has become mob justice – they did the same thing in the Duke rape case, only to have to swallow their own bile later on. The public is assuming these women aren’t tough enough to handle an old white guy’s insults, and the only winners are network execs who make more money from ads when the ratings are good.
I’d love to hear someone more level-headed, like Tavis Smiley, talk about this, instead of the ratings-move mess that the Today Show paraded by putting Imus and Sharpton on simultaneously. I’d love a serious breakdown of the situation – what was warranted, what wasn’t, and how we can prevent a mess like this from ever happening again.
You won’t get that, though. There’s money to be made in scandal.
As long as he’s being paid to be a shock jock why are people complaining? This is nothing more than him doing his job, a job that is apparently very much in demand from the money he and others of his kind make. Its like smacking a bird dog for bringing in a duck, or more aptly a skunk for spraying noxious liquid all over the place. Guys like Imus aren’t the issue. The fact guys like Imus can make millions doing what he does is the issue. We are the issue.
How has it come to this weird point that as a society we are a mix of casual sexuality of young girls, along with demeaning and derogatory stereotypes of women and minorities in mainstream entertainment, while simultaneously exhibiting hyper-reaction and hyper-sensitivity, especially and let’s be honest here, towards well known white men, deployed as a weapon in obvious attempts to simply garner self promotion for some, and displays of power for others?
This reminds me of nipple-gate so much. The outrage is mostly false. Oh sure, plenty of people thought what he said shouldn’t be said, and I’m sure some people felt highly insulted by it, most especially the players themselves. I highly doubt it’s the first time this happens, if, like seems to be the case, being insulting towards pretty much everyone is his shtick. The sad fact is that if he’d just made non-racial insults at their appearance and called them bitches instead of ho’s, there would have been no uproar. No, denigrating women is still mostly A-OK, it’s the denigration of blacks that’s the issue.
The whole mess has taken on momentum of it’s own. Imus deserves a strong rebuke and to be asked to apologize (personally I think he should only if he feels he did wrong, insincere apologies are insulting themselves). Off the air? Please, spare me. It’s all theater, no one is THAT offended or thinks what he did was THAT bad, but they all play it up to pretend to be more virtuous and sensitive than anyone else, never mind they sacrifice the career of a man in the process. The most disgusting (and the competition is fierce) aspect of PC; forcing action on an issue no one REALLY feels is serious, but no (important) dares point out for fear of being called racist/sexist etc.
Yes, Imus is a jerk. But he has plenty of company. Marcotte and McEwan certainly received plenty of support from you, but many Catholics and Christians found their writing offensive. I don’t think any of these people – Imus, Marcotte, McEwan, Sharpton – are doing anything substantive for public policy discussion, but I don’t think they should be censored, either. If the price of free speech is having to have a somewhat thicker skin, then so be it. I prefer that to the sort of society where we have what Nat Hentoff aptly termed “free speech for me but not for thee.”
White people are just petrified of the black community and this fear gives the others the power to do as they see fit. DOESN’T ANY BODY OUTTHERE WATCH BLACK TV? PAY ATTENTION TO THE WORDS. JUST LIKE WEEK ON “MY WIFE AND KIDS” THERE WAS A COMMENT MADE ABOUT “CRACKERS” AND THAT SO AND SO HAD THE PERSONALITY OF A “MARIACHI BAND” I AM HISPANIC….AND I DON’T SEE ANYONE IN MY COMMUNITY BEING UPSET…OR SHOULD WE SUE WHENEVER WE SEE A TACO RESTAURANT AND THE MEXICAN WITH THE HAT AND TWO GUNS? AT WORK I AM CALLED SENORITA BY BLACK CO-WORKERS….I DON’T SEE ME SUING THE COUNTY FOR THAT…..C’MON GET REALISTIC! LOOK BEHIND ALL THIS. SHARPTON, JACKSON AND THE REST OF THE GANG ARE NOTHING BUT A BUNCK OF COMMUNIST BULLIES TRYING TO “CLOSE DOWN AMERICA”. THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY WOULD LIKE MORE; THESE TWO CASTRO’S PUPPETS ARE JUST TRYING TO SCORE POINTS FOR THEMSELVES AND SEE THEIR FACES ON TV TO GAIN POPULARITY IN ORDER TO COMPLY WITH WHATEVER HIDDEN AGENDA THEY BOTH HAVE.
I FORGAT…….MSNBC HAS LOST ME TOO AS A VIEWER AND BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN MY COMMUNITY THAT FEEL THE SAME WAY.
WE WANT IMUS BACK AND WE DON’T WANT TO WAIT ”
MSNBC, DO NOT ALLOW A BUNCH OF BULLIES RUN YOUR SHOW. HAVE A BACK BONE AND STAND FOR YOURSELVES. AS FAR AS THE SPONSORS THAT ARE DROPPING OUT, THEY SHOULD BE BOYCOTTED TOO.
IT IS OK FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY TO HAVE “BLACK COLLEGE FUNDS”, MS. BLACK AMERICA, AN ALL BLACK BASKET BALL TEAM BUT WHITES CAN NOT………GET REAL MSNBC. SHOW BACKBONE.
I guess it is okay for a afican-american to say “crackers” or make disparing remarks about the whites on the airways the problem is that the whites or caucasian do not have Rev.Al Sharpton figure to get in an uproar and demand things like the african americans. Isn’t it sad that the blacks that seem to be upset but the whites are used to having african-americans that start the black college funds, the quota etc. and whites have no choice but to except it. Do we have the right to be upset when like now Al Sharpton who calls Race everytime they get a chance Duke Lacrosse that was a mistake is he going to apologize hell no he stays quite. I think all Caucasians ought to boycott any program with him on it.
One more thought if the Rutgers girls are scarred for life for a comment a bad comment are they going to be able to handle real life!!!! As most adults ask most causcasian women they have probably been called a “HO” at some point in their life and I doubt that it has ruined or scarred them for life.
NO MORE MSNBC!!!!!!!
Yes, being called ‘ho’ is hateful, but the claim that the Rutgers basketball players have been scarred for life doesn’t speak well for women or African Americans. Imus is a nasty piece of work. But why all the outrage over his remarks, and no complaints about rap music, which is very popular in the African American community? And as for scarring experiences, I’d say being insulted by a fool like Don Imus pales in comparison to what the three Duke lacrosse players and their families have gone through. So where’s the great outpouring of support for them in the media? Don’t bother looking, because you aren’t likely to find it.
Racial and gender politics are truly toxic, and need to be toned down. But as long as that helps sell advertsing, don’t look for it to happen any time soon. Don Imus is only a very small part of a much larger problem with sensationalistic media resorting to racial and sexual stereotyping in our culture.
I do not watch any new channels but IMUS in the Morning because he introduces culture and real matters. The black community only shows their true christianity by buring their sick and their statement is of UNFORGIVENESS. Do they a a minority get to decide my tastes in entertainment?
I’m turning OFF my TV It has become a FACISTS STATE
they just announced radio took him off too what a damn joke african americans like al sharpton what are they going to bitch about now???? I truly hope that is the worst thing that those rutger girls have to hear but come on they would have to be in a closet the rest of their lives.I can’t believe that with the war and soldiers sacrificing their lives the world has stopped to make sure these girls have retribution. Come on Imus was trying to be funny. Maybe AL SHARPTON SHOULD PUT HIS MOUTH INTO THE WAR AND MAYBE IRAQ WOULD GIVE UP. HE NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING FOR ALL AMERICANS NOT JUST HIS RACE. (MAYBE HE IS RACIST) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEXT WEEK SOMEONE TELL HIM TO WATCH T.V. ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN SHOWS AND SEE IF THEY CALL WHITES CRACKERS ETC. I THINK I HAVE BEEN SCARRED FOR LIFE SO REV. MAYBE YOU COULD CALL FOR THEM TO BE FIRED AND TAKIN OFF THE AIR.
Guess CBS no longer believes in freedom of speech.
Guess Rutgers does not believe either.
Frightening to know I am alive during a time where we all as humans will be forced to never speak at all.
Imus has been doing this for years. Best press CBS has gotten in years and years. And they fire him? I pay a pretty penny for my cable, and yes, I have been annoyed that my week has been all about Imus and Rutgers’ need for press and respect regarding women’s basketball.
There are so many bigger issues out there…more important issues, and I was always grateful for the humor of Imus. Humor keeps us all from taking ourselves too seriously. If someone wants to call me a ho, who cares, I don’t, whether I am one or not. And there is not one friend or acquaintance of mine…caucasian, african american, asian, hispanic, etc. that has not had nappy hair at some point.
We’re all human.
Spend some time researching Rush L., Glenn Beck (Obama is not black enough), Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Michael Medved and William Bennett (abort all black babies, the crime rate will drop).
Educate yourselves on racism. True racism. Not humor that provides a press opportunity and is a threat to our freedoms. Haven’t enough of them been taken away already?
