As Black leaders, why aren't Rev. Al and Jesse focussing more on the issues that are really hurting African Americans. How about the fact that Africans American men lead the nation in fathering fatherless children. The numbers are staggering. How about criminology reports that show 50% of inmates are African American, yet they only make up 12% of the population in America. What about black on black killing? Also, African American men regardless of economic status have a significantly higher amount of heart disease. Respect starts with yourself!! This is not what Al and Jesse feel in their heart. Should Don Imus apologize for this as well? In my opinion, what they feel in their heart is money from big business, so that they can reap personal gains and nothing more. Professional Pick Pocketers sum it up for me.

I feel that Don Imus should have another change he made his appoligies , He wants to change. let him make some good of this. Everyone except Sharpin & Jessie Jackson deserves forgivness. Jackson & Sharpen do not. Why?, because they are trying to profit from this. They may have done some good in the long ago past, but lately they are only in it for their selfs and not for the good of the colored people. They should take advandage of this to try and work with Don Imus and make something good from this. Instead they are harping and harping on hang him, hang him. Geww Whiz they gave up lynching in the cowboy days. Come on guys grow up and get with teh times. Lay off, even the colored people are disliking you guys. grow up and listen to the people you say you are defending. .....(do you know what defending someone means? do you as so called christian know what forgiveness means... true christians do . YOU GUYS DO NOT.. Shame on both of you.

Imus is the only person in this whole media circus who possesses a sense of humor, and if the holy black alliance has its way they'll strip that from him in addition to his job.

This is a sad day for America. Reminds me of The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. Brian De Palma made a movie of it in 1990 starring Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis. Check it out.

Al Sharpton is only making the problem worst. It is people like him that keep racism around. How about everyone just drops it. "Nappy headed ho's" is not a extreamly offensive thing to say. Al sharton is a nappy head.

Marie, that is such a load of horse $#!+. How do you live with your lack of intellectual integrity-or do you lack any degree of self-awareness?

Francesca, I live with myself just fine because I respect others, do not insult them for their thoughts and ideas, and know how to conduct myself in a civilized discussion.

What you are saying IS a double standard! Perfect illustration.

When some poster talked about accountability here-it sounded more to me like censorship and arming and legitimating the thought police.

The most exasperrating pink elephant in all of this is the fact that if some self-righteous self-appointed nurse ratchet like Sharpton doesn't like terms like "nappy headed hos"-gee hold black pop culture accountable!!!!! Where on earth do you think a white person would've heard these terms?! He was referencing Spike Lee for Christ sake-I wish someone would take the self-important Lee to task for once. But then that would be clearly logical and fair, and we couldn't go after white liberals who are already drowning in guilt and apologies. Such are about as easy targets for vindictive sadists as Britney Spears is for Avril Lavigne.

Anyone else noticing that we're having to throw some independent thinker to a P. C. mob out for blood every couple of months? First Gibson, then Richards, most recently Isaiah Washington and now Imus.

Why cant it be someone like Rosie O'Donnell, for once. Are we being chivalrous? For once I wouldn't object. I never listened to Imus, but I heard he was actually kind of a hard left bully-a la Rosie O'Donnell-so maybe this is good karma, but still I don't like where we're heading, and these comments make me worry about how docilely we're accepting all these thought police encroachments.

It was interesting to read all your comments. They varied from one side of the spectrum to the other. There is such a double standard here, that is sickening. Even here someone called Imus, an idiot? How can one be fair, and put himself in judgment about someone's action, when he starts by insulting the one he is judging?
This is not only here, but it is everywhere, on the news, in public, at work.
The point is either no one says derogatory things against someone, or everybody is allowed to say them; but I do not see that.
This country is involved in a huge debate, that is not settled. Yes there is a love for freedom of speech, but I do not believe people realize the importance, and the responsibility that goes with it. When they say freedom of speech, they mean "My freedom of speech", not everybody's.
I believe that the freedom of speech has gotten out of control, and confusion reigns. How can items that hurt a huge part of the population be considered freedom, like insulting the sensitivity of Christians, Jews, Moslems in their belief, or like accepting pornography as such? Obviously it is only acceptable when you can get away with it, that is if the group you are insulting has no strength or power or will to respond to your insults, like the Christians who seem to be attacked the most, without reaction. This is actually the reason why they are persecuted, while the Jews respond more firmly, and wow, if you dare touch the Moslems, you are in trouble. And by cowardice, the evil comments have spared the Moslems. No one should be exposed to disrespect, specially not for their religious beliefs, because it involves a deity; while a huge hostility broke up because Imus insulted the sensitivity of a few women, reprehensible as part of all, but a thing that constantly happens day in and day out, whether on the air, public or personal.
Let us stop this hypocrisy, and accept that we are all sinners, who offend mostly God, but also each other. Stop that air of nobility, that conceit innate in us, and accept humbly that we are dust and will return into dust.
No one says that Imus did a good thing, but then who really did, without the grace of God. May be the lesson to learn from this is how hypocrit we all are, and how much we need to reevaluate ourselves, and our relation with each other. "LOVE GOD with all your heart, all your mind, and all your strength; and LOVE YOUR NEIHGBOUR AS YOURSELF"
If you do not subscribe to this divine commandments, then you must have done now and then, and frequently things much worse than Imus ever did, though they might have never been recorded.
"LET THE ONE WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE"
And this thought is one of the reasons, I believe that Christ is God, because no human being could have thought of it, proven by the huge stones everyone is casting on Imus, not dissimilar to the Pharisees who were ready to stone the adulteress caught in the act.

Enough has to be enough, when are we going to stop the hypocricy and treat all fair and even?
If they can fire imus for what he said, it is a TRAVESTY that Mayor Nagin was allowed to stay, or even worse be RE elected.

I was raised and taught that all were created equal, my parents instilled a deep belief in me about the equal rights of all humans. But lately, the continous reverse racism that is not only so prevalent but seen as a GOOD thing has started to turn my stomach. Imus is in my book not the best radio personality, but considering the thousands of hours he has been on the air.. this is a storm in a teacup. Unfortunately, this is nothing new. A white man can't say a fraction of the racial generalisations a black man can get away with.

Unfortunately, the inequalities that exist in this country are such that there is nothing left but to pick a side. And equal rights is not an option. I can't see myself be Anti-anything... BUT i have definately turned PRO-White... And i refuse to see why this would be any worse than being Pro-Black. Pro-Martian or anything else.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the offensive comments or language…. censorship is censorship. Stop one then you need to stop all.

I never said anything about censorship. I do not support censorship in any form and I do not agree with Sharpton or Jesse Jackson in that regard. I do not believe Imus should have been fired for what he said. Sharpton and Jackson would have rap artists remove derogatory words from their work. I do not support this either. There is a reason for the use of those derogatory terms in rap that dates back to the rap group NWA. Country artists do not use those derogatory words because they are simply not a part of their experience. It would be dishonest for them to include such words in their art. I believe the truth is that Imus' statement was part of his experience but he wouldn't admit it. It is pretty simple. If you have experienced racism or if you are a racist, these words are part of your experience. If you have not, these words aren't in your vocabulary. Thanks for the dialogue, Cindy.

I respect your point of view Marie. However, offensive is offensive. It doesn't matter to me the content. Country artists write about their experiences also, but they don't use the derogatory terms that rap artists use. I completely agree that Imus was wrong and should have apologized the minute it came out of his mouth. But I still believe people are living by a double standard. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the offensive comments or language.... censorship is censorship. Stop one then you need to stop all. It's a right to freedom of speech. I do not agree with or like everything I hear on the tv or the radio. I then change the channel. I for sure do not agree with Jesse and Al, but they also do have the constitutional right to say it.

But let Akon, Snoop Dogg, or any black rapper say it ALL DAY long on the radio and the tv and that’s fine. ( And by the way, they talk about all women in a derogatory manner, not just black women). It’s a double standard and it’s wrong.

There is a world of difference between what rap artsts rap about and what Imus jokes about. There just isn't a word of difference. Rap is art (even if you don't like it). Imus is commentary (or joking as he would have you believe). Rap is an expression of experience. Was Imus expressing his experience? Does he know the Rutgers team? Imus zeroed in on a group of women, college educated women, women who had just achieved greatness, and made it clear that in his eyes, no matter what they achieved, they would never be equal. It was a mistake that he could have recovered from. Imus could have turned this around had he been honest. He should have talked about how these racial prejudices were a part of his early years (nappy hasn't been used since the early 60's), how he knows it is wrong but how difficult it is to grow beyond those early stereotypes we are taught. Instead, he got defensive. That is the biggest difference between Imus and rap artists. Artists are honest and stand behind what they write. Imus has not been honest.

The good "Reverends" are always screaming for justice. What they really mean is jusice, but only if you are African-American. I am white and therefore not entitled to their "justice". I have 5 children. Three of them are white. So they would not be entitled either. Possibly my two bi-racial childrent might. But since they are only half black, it's a toss up. My African-American children, friends, and family ALL think they are nuts. God forbid one white person call someone a nappy headed #&$^. But let Akon, Snoop Dogg, or any black rapper say it ALL DAY long on the radio and the tv and that's fine. ( And by the way, they talk about all women in a derogatory manner, not just black women). It's a double standard and it's wrong !! I am personally offended by many of those song lyrics. But do they care about that. Heck no !! It's always about race . It's men like them that keep racism alive and in the forefront of this country. If there is truely an injustice, then fight for it, no matter the race, color, religion, or creed.
Shame on Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson !

I'm starting to think people are actually doing things like this to "help" their career. The saying is, "there is no such thing as bad press" certainly seems to ring true. We still don't have adequate civil rights laws to protect the public from these verbal lynchings. Considering our history, the penalties for committing such an offense should be high. It's not a laughing matter, whites have shown that they feel so strongly about race that they are willing to murder and assassinate those who oppose them. We've suffered enough and there should be a zero tolerance for this kind of behavior. The very fact that there are those who are quick to accept his ingenuine "I'm sorry" shows that whites haven't evolved very much from sentiments rooted in the inhumane treatment, murder and enslavement of other human beings.

Its funny- all of the pedophiles and antisemites go to rehab, while the racists go to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for redemption! Maybe there ought to be a handbook for recovering from fatal career moves!

Why is Imus apologizing to Sharpton? He ought to be speaking to the girls on the basketball team that he offended.

This was a Sharpton crucifixion of Imus, not a discussion.

I suspect that Sharpton is trying to set himself up as, "defender of Black America" at Imus's expense. Meaning if you want the black vote you will have kiss Sharptons butt to get it. Won't work because his mouth is just way to abrasive.

On CNN Sharpton hinted around at replacing Imus with an "all black program". Well get the ratings then Al.....but ya can't so it won't happen. You could probably get a show on BET Al, but you don't want that do ya?!

Saw it on the news this evening. Sharpton left the studio every time there was a commercial break, and Imus had a snit about it...told Sharpton's producer he wasn't there to take any bull****.

It's a sad mess all around.

I feel sort of sorry for Imus. He's an idiot sometimes, a lot of the time, but I doubt that he's a hardened racist. Still, its important to hold those with access to the public ear accountable. Pitiful-he really seems to be begging Sharpton to be allowed to keep his job. Pitiful.
