British Hostages in Iran: At Home Tomorrow?

President Ahmadinejad meets one of the sailors at his presidential office after agreeing to free them.

The president of Iran shook hands with the British hostages this afternoon after announcing he was freeing them, says a news report. “Mr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he had pardoned them as an Easter present for the British people and to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.

“Ahmadinejad smiled as he talked through an interpreter to several of the men held captive for 13 days in the capital Tehran. One of them was heard to say to him: ‘Thanks for releasing us. I wish you success.’

“The men were dressed in suits and Leading Seaman Faye Turney, the only woman in the 15-strong patrol of marines and sailors, wore a blue headscarf and pink shirt but it was not thought she had shaken hands with the president.

“Earlier, Mr Ahmadinejad said Iran would never accept trespassing of its territorial waters. ‘On behalf of the great Iranian people, I would like to thank the Iranian coastguard for courageously defending our Iranian territorial waters,’ the president added.

“He then pinned medals on the chests of three coastguard officers…”

    al-Taqiyya. Aba Kahl.

“That person is not a liar who makes peace between two people, and speaks good words to do away their quarrel, although they should be lies.” Mishcat, vol ii. p.427.

“That God will reward the People of Truth for their truth, and punish the hypocrites if that be His Will, or turn to them in Mercy; for God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Quran 33:24)

    Swaraaj,

Asked this a few days ago: What are your thoughts on Imran Khan? Moderate? Democrat?

  3. Sorry Stevesh…forgot. The guy is fun loving…has an image of a playboy. Married a very rich British upper crust woman…divorced…has kids from her. Untested political material…but reports suggest he is a moderate and democrat. But beyond the labels…a nice guy.

Thanks, Swaraaj. So often when one reads about Pakistan, it is portrayed as (ISI) dark. I may spend too much time at Counterterrorism.com blog.

Can a playboy athlete capture the imagination of the people while challenging secular/religious prejudices? Is Khan divisive (not for his politics or character, but just because of who he is) in the present atmosphere? This not exactly apposite, but Jack Kennedy had to overcome much anti-Catholic bias 50 years ago in the States. Or could he be a Vaclav Havel?

Antipathy, or worse, toward Delhi, or a forward outlook?

  5. Very briefly…cricket players have a special place in the hearts of the people in the Indian subcontinent. Imran Khan is among the favourites both in India and Pakistan. Indian media is fond of him…and a majority of people like him. But then he has not been tested politically…he lost an election in Pakistan. But then…you never can tell…

“al-Taqiyya. Aba Kahl,” while fanatics there and many here view Bush as al-Dajjal.

(Not without reason, laugh the liberals in the USA:)

Al-Dajjal is his name. And he actually is the Muslim anti-Christ. Well-educated Muslims will instantly recognise the guy: he is short, red-faced, has hair that sticks up and is blind at the right eye. The false prophet inspires vast amounts of followers anyhow: 70,000 heavily armed believers join the bad guy.
