Final Three Members of ‘Super Committee’ Picked

Joe Gandelman commented yesterday on the first nine members of the so-called “Super Committee” —tasked with solving our nation’s financial woes—picked by Democrats and Republicans.

The Washington Post has just announced the final three members of that committee. Actually, they were just announced by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), via her Twitter feed.

They are “top members of the House Democratic leadership and include Reps. Jim Clyburn (S.C.); Chris Van Hollen (Md.), the Budget Committee ranking member; and Rep. Xavier Becerra (Calif.).”

With this announcement, the full 12-member committee charged with recommending an additional $1.2 trillion cuts to the deficit, has now been picked—and “all will be well in the garden…”

Its official we are boned. If I were the pentagon I would start preparations for that punishing cut that is headed their way when this all goes up in flames.

  2. LOGAN PENZA says:

I would not get too concerned about any “punishing cuts”. Congress cannot bind itself. They can always waive anything they create. That’s why Gramm-Rudman was ineffective.

  3. TheMagicalSkyFather says:

LP-I suppose that is true but that would actually look much worse wouldnt it? Gutting the trigger since it was about to be pulled. Could we even take the congress seriously ever again?

  4. LOGAN PENZA says:

You’re assuming that either party cares about how it looks to anyone other than their base. And the alternative to gutting the trigger would be Republicans having to explain why they let the Defense budget get slashed and Democrats having to explain why they allowed the central component of health care reform to die. Both parties would eagerly “look bad” by gutting the trigger before they would actually allow the trigger to be pulled.

The kabuki dance didn’t end with the debt ceiling bill. It just entered the next act.

And is anyone taking Congress seriously now? Ok. Anyone other than diehards in both bases, the Beltway media, and the members themselves?

    Your realism is highly depressing.

On a side note this would in my view give the TP an actual valid cause to go nuclear over since I even agree that it would be utterly lame.

  6. JSpencer says:

    Cynicism is the new realism.

  7. DLS says:

There was stupid PC stuff about diversity earlier. I had guessed PC extremism: black, hisp, woman, at least one Prog caucus member. Clyburn, Grijalva, Shakowsky for a joke stunt.

  8. DLS says:

Triggers like any law can be defeated by Congressional exemption or waiver. ;-)

  9. TheMagicalSkyFather says:

“And they stood like cowards before their own trigger” makes a rather nice line.

  10. dduck says:

Trigger is dead and so is this silly committee.

  11. SteveinCH says:

Yes where is the post on the selection of radical dems?

Ah well, the committee was doomed anyway

DLS, what in heavens does this have to do with the topic at hand?

    Please stay on topic.

  13. DLS says:

Dorian: in case you had trouble understanding, many speculated about who Pelosi might choose or select, and why she would.

    I hope that helps.

  14. DORIAN DE WIND, Military Affairs Columnist says:

    No, it doesn’t “help,” DLS.

What are some of your sources for the “many” “PC extremist” speculations —or is this just one more of your sick jokes.

And please drop the condescending “in case you had trouble understanding.”
