This is a fine example of why I hate Newt Gingrich and the neocons. Even when they do have a valid point, they are unable to express it in anything other than a racist, shortsighted way that shows for all whats really going thru their minds. His PR people are likely in the same support group as Rush’s. Probably goes something like this:
“I told him to say that English is the language of the US and that immigrants will be doing themselves a great service by learning how to speak it. Assimilation is key and cuts both ways here. He managed to slur both the Jews and Latinos before he was done. At least we didn’t lose any votes.”
It’s probably not worthwhile to ponder here the distinction between ghettos created externally, from discrimination or out of the need for safety in numbers, and ghettos created internally from the reluctance or refusal to assimilate.
It would have been obvious that Gingrich was talking about Spanish (in fact, I bet he was–though I’m not sure why that makes it better), but the problem is that Gingrich denied it, and crafting an explanation that implies it was Hebrew. If he’s going to lie, I’m going to mock.
David, after this, I took the time to listen to Newt’s commentary on C-Span. I have come to the conclusion that Newt Gingrich is a laughable ass that likes to listen to himself drone on as if the world was actually listening to him with interest. Never mind that he is a neocon, he’s simply not playing with a full deck!
Anybody else have the thought that maybe, just maybe, he’s actually referring to the true, initial definition of ghetto, not the society adaptation? A “ghetto” is an area where people of any certain ethnic background are separated from the rest of a community. The statement, when in context, is that if English is the official language of our country, and people from other lingual backgrounds learn it, they can separate themselves from the proverbial “ghetto,” an ethnic bubble, and integrate themselves into American society. That’s all he’s saying.
Another thing. Reading your comments, you don’t really justify anything you say. You just kind of call him names. It’s the equivalent of sticking your tongue out at him. Effective arguments, guys, effective arguments. Let’s have more civil political debate. Less people bashing, more idea centered discussion. Sound cool?
Gingrich is a legend in his own mind. Newt is 90% ego and 8% substance and 2% correct in opinion.
