Ridiculous! Or, The Pot Calls the Kettle Black!

AP report out of Geneva, Switzerland:

UN rights council adopts global religious defamation act

Islamic countries pushed through a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council on Friday urging a global prohibition on the public defamation of religion, a response largely to the furor last year over caricatures published in a Danish newspaper of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.

The statement proposed by the Organization of Islamic Conference addressed what it called a “campaign” against Muslim minorities and the Islamic religion around the world since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

The resolution, which was opposed by European and a number of other non-Muslim countries, “expresses deep concern at attempts to identify Islam with terrorism, violence and human rights violations.”

It makes no mention of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism or any other religion besides Islam, but urges countries “to take resolute action to prohibit the dissemination of racist and xenophobic ideas and material aimed at any religion or its followers that constitute incitement and religious hatred, hostility, or violence.”

  1. Luckily the freedom of speech isn’t a human right of course…

    Heh.

The UN should worry about stopping and preventing wars of aggression (like the US in Iraq, Russia in Chechnya or Israel in Lebanon+Palestine). That’s why it was created in the first place.

And to think people actually want the UN to be a World Government.

  4. Pete Abel says:

Funny that the Europeans are OK with the UN encroaching on our freedoms/sovereignty, but more than happy to protest the UN when it encroaches on theirs.

Is there any legitimacy left to the U.N.?

What would make anyone believe that islam is identified with terrorism, violence and human rights violations?

This statement turns reality on its head. It is muslims who are launching wars of aggression in these places and elsewhere all around the world. How about the UN preventing wars of aggression by muslims?

  8. Margaret says:

If this weren’t so dangeorus it would be ridiculous.

  9. For any of the current “Muslim countries” to speak of respect for religion is a joke. For the most part (I admit I’m not aware of any exception except Indonesia.) they buy into the demonization of other religions exported by Saudi Arabia’s subsidized Wahabbi madrassas. They have laws that limit or outright ban the free exercise of other religions. How pathetic.

This has been a problem with the Human Rights Coundil of the UN for many long years. It has become the political arm of Muslim countries in the international theater.

Instead of denouncing the UN as a whole, the focus should be on the area where the problem lies. Non-muslim countries should lead a drive for reform, and fast.
