I think this is one of your better posts on the subjects of Muslim extremism/indoctrination. Bravo.

I find it quite encouraging that this debate is actually going on in the Muslim world.

The interviewer (a woman without a head scarf I might point out) is actually asking fairly tough questions. She may not follow up when Omar Bakri Mohammed gives a BS answer, but that is something that could be said of western journalism as well.

I'd like to share the words of the counterpoint in the clip spoken by Bahraini Shiite Scholar Dhiyaa Al-Mursawi:
Today, Jihad does not mean carrying out attacks with airplanes. Jihad means economic power, development, strengthening human rights, and establishing a civil rather than theocratic, state. We can elaborate on this later. Jihad means that we be productive, and manage to invade the West with our economic products, our science, our books, and so on. But if we narrow Jihad down to striking with swords or bullets, and to the killing of civilians... Of course, I am not justifying the Western governments, but there is a crisis.
That is a version of Jihad I can live with, and I hope the sense of those words are heard by all of the people of the ME.

Just goes to show that people can justify anything. I wish their views were not common, but unfortunately they are all too common.

I would really really like to see these guys sit down with Ann Coulter and Rush and just talk to eachother for about 20 minutes. I have a theory it would create a singularity of hypocrisy and self serving rationalization that would tear the fabric of time and space to shreds. Plus it would be really great television.

Obviously there is no reasoning with these people, they are insane or evil or, very likely, both. There will always be people who will use any excuse to kill and terrorize others (Spain's own terrorist group is an example) but what IS true is that extremism thrives on misery and ignorance. Misery makes you desperate, which will make you more likely to look for an enemy, especially one that is much richer than you. Ignorance will allow you to believe just about anything you're told, including that this one country is to blame for all your ills. Add a grain of truth to the matter (and I don't care if it's not PC, the US has had a negative influence on many people's lives) and you're all set to create extremists. Oh and it REALLY helps if you've been taught all your life, through religion, to accept the word of people of authority without question.

Ignorance is especially important. If the populace realizes that their local warlords have much more to do with their misery than the immoral nation half way across the globe, the whole "martyr" thing stops flying.

Mind you ignorance is bad for everybody, and any population that finds itself unaware of the world around them can be easily fooled.

Worse still, "teachings" such as these are infiltrating non-Muslim countries. For the first time religious freedom now has real negative connotations.

When it comes to people who will deliberately blow up a car full of children, I don't think it's possible to reason with them. Does anyone?

Consider an analogy: are sheep dogs trained to reason with wolves? Why Not?
