The Lost Poetry of Sikh Poet Nunihal Singh Layal: Birth of Christ

(Editor’s Note: This is part of an ongoing series to preserve on the Internet the “lost” poetry of Nunihal Singh Layal, the “Tradesman Poet,” who I met in New Delhi in 1974. Some poems contain his original introductions. I have a self-published book of his that is disintegrating and falling apart and over the next year or two I will run and preserve all of his poetry here. Joe Gandelman)

Birth of Christ
by Nunihal Singh Layal

As Lord Christ was a simple man, so his teachings are simple, which has influenced about half the world. He by His teaching and sacrifice removed the darkness that was prevailing at that time. His teachings are ever true and simple always.

Birth of Christ expelled darkness and brought light;
Pardoned sin and became a true guide;
He is all powerful and above all mights;
Being a son of God, he is only who is right;
His teachings are simple and sweet-like flower;
He who goes by them, becomes the tower of Power;
Fearless, and stern in faith, and never misuses his power;
Is kind to all, enemy to none, and helpful in need of hour.

  1. Allen says:

    Such kind words from an admirer of my lord, a Jewish carpenter, the son of man.

  2. I’m sure that I have the last copy of his old, disintegrating self published book. And my goal is to put every word of it on TMV over the next year or two. His nephew the great Gian Singh, editor of the Hindustan Times Evening News when I was there, used to shake his head and joke about his uncle’s ripe poetry but I knew he loved his uncle. And this poet felt so deeply about his writing. I decided when I found the book after thinking it was lost to put every word on the Internet.

  3. DR. CLARISSA PINKOLA ESTÉS, Managing Editor of TMV, and Columnist says:

    Thank you Joe. So many voices closed away in forgotten books. Thank you for keeping his work alive
