Dropping a baby through a hatch in the hospital is just a modern version of the revolving tables convents had for abandoned infants. Italy is way ahead of them on this; they actually have high tech Baby Boxes for abandoned infants. One thing that most articles DON'T mention is that a big part of the increases in abandonments is due to immigrant mothers. Despite multiple reminders that you can leave your baby in a hospital, no questions asked, many illegal women don't want to risk it, and resort to abandoning them elsewhere or even killing them (often under pressure from their boyfriends/husbands).

Those nuts in Texas have a solution to the problem.

Under Patrick’s SB 1567, AKA the Texas Baby Purchasing Act of 2007, women would qualify for a $500 payment from the state within 60 days of signing away all parental rights to their newborn.
