Center of Attention

A round up of recent reporting and commentary by a few centrist, moderate, and independent bloggers.

Jeff Jarvis is miffed about this instance of old media censoring new media.

In the realm of religion, before tearing out after Neal Boortz on whether or not he is (as self-proclaimed) a Libertarian, Gun Toting Liberal spotlights some examples of extreme (ridiculous and unsupportable) arguments made by certain Christian Rightists, while Andrew Sullivan links to Stuart Rothenberg, who advises the D’s to give up on their efforts to court Evangelicals.

Speaking of Mr. Sullivan, he also excerpts “an eloquent, profound and conservative defense of inclusion.”

At his place, TMV assistant editor Michael vdG, zeroes in on a NYT article about Hillary and the military.

At The Reaction, another TMV assistant editor, Michael Stickings, comments on “the Fred Thompson romance,” suggesting Mr. T is popular because some Republicans think he may be a “less bigoted” version of George Allen. Those Republicans should pay better attention.)

At Kiko’s House, TMV contributor Shaun Mullen weighs in on the recent two-party-vs-more debate at TMV and elsewhere.

Sean Aqui believes diplomacy is starting to work with Iran.

At Italian Sandwich, in a handful of words and a lifted quote from Red State, sanskritg reminds us of the unfairness of over-simplifying political debates.

The Angry Independent shares thoughts on the present and future of the NAACP, from Ronald S. Sullivan, Jr. and Eddie S. Glaude Jr. — both “senior fellows at the Jamestown Project, a nonpartisan think tank that focuses on democracy and social issues.”

It’s a matter of how far would we take his principles of nonviolence, and that’s the issue Thompson raised. When peace activists use him as their emblem, they should be prepared to answer that question: is there ever such a thing as a just war?

  3. [...] As noted in Tuesday’s Center of Attention, Gun Toting Liberal was inspired to question Boortz’s self-proclaimed libertarianism. In contrast, Will’s muse prompted him to use Boortz’s post to illustrate “why people think conservatives don’t care about people. Will’s conclusion: People think conservatives don’t care about people because some of the most mean-spirited voices in America have defined the movement.
