C Stanley,
I completely agree, currently i enjoy playing a first person shooter game called FarCry. In this game are creatures, on the island you are trying to escape, called Trygins. These creatures are genetically modified apes and humans. The idea was to create super soldiers that could win wars and such. Only bad part is that they all pretty much broke free and got lose and are all over the island causing chaos.
Moral of the story is that when you try and make a creature superior then you at killing, most likely it can and will kill you.

Porcratus,
Why shoudn't scientific ethics be scrutinized? Do humans in general not have a right to decide that just because something CAN be done doesn't mean that it SHOULD? Obviously there are health benefits to humans from certain procedures, but I think we should precede with caution and failure to consider and openly debate the ethics will lead to disasters. There will always be scientists who want to push the envelope and without society putting the brakes on, we're likely to create quite a few Frankensteins in years to come.

"the procedures don’t cause the animals undue pain"

I thought they are going to get the liver for organ transplant?

"Any diabetic knows that their insulin comes from horses"

But do we kill the horses to get the insulin?

I have to agree with Lynx's logic on this.

There are far more horrendous things that we as a human species do to the other species of this planet, and killing a sheep that would other wise have died for meat to sustain us, would die for organs to help someone live.

The only worry I have with this is:
1) Even though the procedure seems sound enough, an accident may occur when a hybrid is produced, basically not just a sheep that has human like organs, but a creature that is part sheep part human, one it could be in a constant pain and anguish with just living (hard to believe an accidental hybrid would be stable) or becomes partially or fully intelligent, as a sheep body or hybrid creature
2) word of this incident (of course it would be kept under wraps) gets out and religious, animal right groups, governments from across the world, every kind of group you can think of and government would be all over the incident like ant's on cake. Media, Governments going into further research for other animal like engineering and such.

Basically hysteria. So if this practice does get accepted by the majority, which I hope it does, it better be controled ‘very’ closely.

A Google search for the researcher doesn't yield any real new press releases. The research is on going and over 7 years old. Seems that someone is trying to create a story. Once again Reason Online looks at the subject with some Reason

As someone whose father is alive today because of a pig's valve surgically inserted into his heart, I thankfully welcome the new technology. The procedure my dad had has given me and my family 20+ years of his presence.

I am a vegetarian and an animal lover, but human life still takes precedence on this planet.

As creepy as it may sound on instinct, there is nothing objectively wrong with it, as long as you don't start making sheep, or other animals, with human intelligence and awareness, and as long as the procedures don't cause the animals undue pain and anguish (any more than say killing them to EAT their meat would).

Any diabetic knows that their insulin comes from horses, it’s not like we aren’t using animal products for medical treatments anyway. Frankly, I find much creepier that medical treatments pass through a phase where they are tested on monkeys, which we already know are self-aware, have emotions and the highest intelligence of any living being on the planet except us. There are even reports that they have a sense of ethics, yet we routinely inject them with lethal diseases to test our new medicines. Now, I understand the reason this is done, but I still think its way creepier than a sheep with a humanized liver.

As for morality; ask yourself this. What makes you more uneasy, letting your dad die from heart disease because he’s too old to be high on the waiting list for a new heart, or letting him get a heart harvested from a pig?

I suppose this is the sort of thing that Bush was rejecting in that mysterious reference to human-animal hybrids from his 2006 (2005?) SOTU address?

Just the kind of thing to make stem cell research seem all warm and fuzzy by comparison.

(Though not like a pet sheep).

How do you like my new sweater, it's 80% Merino, 5% cotton and 15% Kevin.

I realize this is silly, because after all we butcher them for their meat, but I still find this a horrifying use of an animal. I can't explain why.

A more pragmatic objection: humans have enough rejection problems with organs that are 100% human. What kind of rejection issues - or, for that matter, structural and function issues - will there be for organs that aren't entirely human, or even primate?

What are the sheep thinking? Simple:

God. I hate that guy over there. Everyday he comes here... wearing a freakin' SWEATER! And it's WOOL! How'd he like it if we showed up wearing a freakin' hairshirt?

Or:

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence? So why don't we get through this freakin' fence already!

Now. Is it just me or am I projecting a Brooklyn accent onto sheep?
