Debt Ceiling Attack By U.S. Republicans ‘Backfires’ (Salzburger Nachrichten, Austria)

Have Republicans gone too far with their absolutest positions on raising the U.S. debt limit and demanding tax cuts without any new revenue? Try as one might, there are precious few people abroad who see the economic world like the Republican Tea Party faction does. Salzburger Nachrichten columnist Thomas Spang writes that U.S. Republicans have already lost their attempt to ‘get Obama into trouble,’ and that the best they can hope for is that ‘Tea Party newcomers’ see reason before the entire global economy is affected.

For the Salzburger Nachrichten, Thomas Spang writes in part:

Their battle cry of “no new taxes” against the backdrop of the enormous debt the superpower has amassed is as delusional as the threat of national bankruptcy is irresponsible. Should Social Security checks fail to go out on August 3rd, those affected will point their fingers at the people responsible – the Republicans. With every passing day of this countdown toward insolvency, President Barack Obama’s political position gets stronger.

In the face of looming defeat, the Republican’s foot soldiers are threatening to mutiny against their leadership. The only open question is whether in their fervor, they will risk political suicide and drag the global economy into the abyss with them. They haven’t much time left to see sense.

Probably more likelyhood we’ll all grow wings and fly before that happens.

  2. Allen says:

Good grief even the AUSTRIANS are upset with us now. Now the whole world is starting to hate Republicans! Soon we’ll be rounding up House Republicans and shipping them to The Hague for trial.

This debt ceiling stuff is getting to be just to dadgum much.

ECHO, ECho, Echo, echo, .cho. .o. .

Outside of that chamber, there’s a real world, where economies have limits, interrelated debts cause disasters to spiral across the globe, and the omnipotent governments and central banks are discovering (yet again) that they have limits.

  4. DLS says:

Welcome to reality, people. It’s easy (and so cheap and tawdry) to bash anyone saying the word No in as well as to government, and to its vested interests (including Washington worshipping Herd members). Not everyone, though, has developed so poorly here.

  5. DLS says:

Limits — [chuckle] — what will the ignorant (and dishonest) do after the start of the next decade, when the real Era of Limits begins?

(It could begin earlier than the 2020s, you know. Social Security already is running deficits, a fact that the Usual Suspects refuse to know, and the deficit-related federal budget problems, which the Usual Suspects also refuse to deny, actually have begun already.)

  6. Allen says:

    The “ignorant” DLS?

Why is it, that those that disagree with you, have to be “ignorant”?

So where you “speaking truth to power” when Bush destroyed our national budget surplus and created the deficit to begin with?

    Some how I think not.
