Gates repeatedly argued that the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, had become so tainted abroad that legal proceedings at Guantánamo would be viewed as illegitimate, according to senior administration officials. He told President Bush and others that it should be shut down as quickly as possible.�

Too bad Gates was talked out of it by “The Usual Suspects”. Gitmo and Abu Ghraib have enabled enemies of this country to drag our good name through the mud. We look like hypocrites when we try to malign other nations for flouting the constraints of international law. The more I see of Gates in action, the more respect I have for him. He is about the only bright spot (except current Treasury Sec) in a Cabinet of fawning loyalists.
There is no good advice that this administration will not ignore.
