[...] Our good friend Joe Gandelman over at The Moderate Voice has this to say… John Edwards’ dramatic press conference announcing that his wife Elizabeth’s dreaded breast cancer had returned, but that the couple decided he should press on with the campaign anyway, truly seemed the real thing. It was a moment in Presidential campaign 2008 — which actually begun about a milli-second after the calender changed to 2007 — that transcended politics.
Of course it is selfish and self-seeking, and could very well be a publicity-sympathy stunt. He never had a chance at the Presidency and Obama and Al Gore both would beat him at getting the Vice Presidency.

The only thing of value his mistaken defenders can say is that we should wonder who else in Washington, in either major party, would do the same thing given the position sought and what Washington and politics are like nowadays.

I can't think of a better example for the American people that John and Elizbeth Edwards. I cant think of a better President and First Lady as John and Elizabeth Edwards. I pray they cross the thresh hold of the White House as their home together!!!

I have great admiration for Edwards' devotion to his wife, and I admire both of them for their obvious commitment and love for one another. That does not change the fact that I think he's not fit to be a senator, much less a president, and I think he's a blowhard and hypocrite to boot.

I would seriously consider voting for her. Like so many lame politicians, he married his superior, not his equal.

At first, I admit that I did not get Edwards' decision to move on with his presidential campaign, given the tragic news of the recurrence of his wife's cancer. Then, I watched a replay of their press conference and came to the realization that these two people are public servants in the true sense. We have gotten so far from this definition in public life, where too often politicians use public office to line their pockets, ensure their own reelection or prepare for consolidation of their wealth after leaving office as an industry lobbyist, that we no longer recognize when someone is responding to a true calling.

Edwards and his wife Elizabeth see America slipping into an uneasy alliance between political power and wealthy interests, where decisions are no longer made to benefit the common good, but rather the moneyed few. It was obvious to me that Elizabeth wants her husband to win in order to reverse this trend, and is not willing to let her disease come between them and their goal. For that, I admire her.

Only the very small minds of those on the very far right pay any attention to Limbaugh. The kind of people who, when they look into their hearts, find a wide open space full of windblown litter and the odd dead rat.

Lets hope that by continuing to fight for what they believe in helps Elizabeth beat this thing.

Limbaugh is that radio man who cannot control his weight nor his drug habits, so why does anyone listen to a thing he says, esp. re: mature decision making?

While she has a terminal illness, Elizabeth Edwards isn't really physically "sick" yet. I admire that they have decided to keep marching forward, without letting the simple shadow of death deter them. After all, this is exactly what they did the last time around, just without the publicity. With almost a year before primaries, there is plenty of time for John Edwards to drop out if Elizabeth takes her death bed. I would be creeped out if he pursued his campaign at the final months of her life or just after her death. But my understanding of her prognosis is that she may have several more good years of life left. And to John and Elizabeth, campaigning; that is spreading the message, educating people, and giving them hope; IS living and their life's purpose. Really what else would they do?

How will the average American look at Edwards from now on? Will Americans respect John and Elizabeth more, or does ‘John Doe’ believe that John Edwards should have withdrawn from the race?

I suspect, and fear, that the reactions of most Americans to Elizabeth's illness will be like their reaction to gays.

Much like those of us with gay acquantances understand they pose no threat to "the sanctity of marriage", those of us familiar with the Edward's situation will recognize the need for, yes, even cancer patients, to go on with their lives.

And frankly, the more meaningful the life the better.

And while I'm writing, and am frankly more than a little po'd, can someone tell me when we can finally tune out Rush Limbaugh?

Sorry, I'm a confessed skeptic, but there are levels of cynicism even I can't stomach.

It's hard to imagine doing something so all-consuming as running for President (or BEING President) while my wife is fighting cancer. Frankly, I don't get it. I'm sure some of you will rake me over the coals for this, but it strikes me as extremely selfish to put his political ambitions first.

My heart aches for these two brave people...John Edwards would be a great and caring president, rather like Bill Clinton, but without the feet of clay. and there would be no finer first lady than Elizabeth. She'd be the greatest of them all.

I hope they both get the chance to walk into the White House as their home.
