« Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: “Limbaugh is Irrelevantâ€?
Bush, Congress And Courts Heading Towards Political High Noon »

A hallmark of the Bush administration has been its penchant for secrecy and lying – even keeping things secret and lying about them when there is no good reason to do so.
Take Vice President Dick Cheney’s office. Please!
In the latest example of this perverse dynamic, the veep’s office denied on Tuesday morning that Cheney had made yet another trip to the hospital because of his recurring health issues, in this instance blood clots in his leg.
A spokeswoman told CNN that there was no episode and her boss was merely at the hospital for a follow-up visit.
When word leaked out that Cheney had indeed had another clotting problem, the spokeswoman reversed field and acknowledged that the veep had experienced discomfort in his left lower leg.
Then the veep’s office again reversed field and claimed that Cheney was hard at work in his office.
When word then leaked out that he was at George Washington University Hospital, the office yet again reversed field and again acknowledged that he had experienced discomfort.
How can the White House expect Americans to trust the administration on the big things when they lie about the little things?
Just asking.
Shaun – This is a little off topic but relate to the Bush/Cheney abuse of powers. On CSPAN this morning Bruce Fein talked about his new CONSERVATIVE group to work against the Bush executive power grab.
Here is the link to their groups website.

It’s time to shut off the lights when four Conservatives do something like this.
Rudi:
An extraordinary development! Thank you for sharing.
The snark in me wonders if some conservatives fear not curtailing the executive power grab before Bush leaves office.
I’ll just be glad to get it gone.
Barr has taken a similar stand before. Within the last couple months, Richard Viguerie was on the Shultz show saying this on the radio. These four haven’t been corrupted by power like Grover Norquist.
The elder statesmen of the GOP probably regret its current incarnation, much as Goldwater did before his death. Most of the current apologists are on its payroll or lobbyists with companies that count on Republican policies of tax cuts for business and deregulation. Since the members of Congress won’t speak up about the status quo, it is incumbent that veteran politicians do so, in order to save our democracy from being a tool of people like Norquist, James Dobson and Rupert Murdoch.
this is in response to your post about Rice, since comments for that are not currently accessible.
What Tel Aviv govt are you referring to? Is Ms Rice pissing off the Govt of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality? AFAIK thats the only govt in Tel Aviv. The govt of Israel is located in Jerusalem.
You are either ignorant, or biased in your viewpoint.
And its quite clear no serious substantive negotiations can take place as long as the govt of the PA is headed by a PM who wont accept the basic prerequisites for negotiating with Israel. OTOH, if State Dept reps are talking with select individuals in the PA govt to figure out how to weaken Hamas, and to keep the Euros on board for the financial boycott of Hamas, then it may well be worth it, and I doubt very much that the Govt in JERUSALEM (do you need the address?) will mind.
isnt it amazing how Goldwater, who opposed the Civil Rights act, has become the model of what Republicans should be?

Would it shock you to know that I would defend Israel to the death and I come by that naturally? One of the greatest influences on my life and the man who set me on the path to journalism was my Jewish grandfather. So kindly back off.

… and Hillary and the “First Man” re-enter it?

Even so-called “moderate” Abbas (the so-called the way so many people on this site misuse the term when they are liberal) has tried to get warring factions in the Territories to stop by saying they should all be using their guns on Israel instead.
That “moderate” himself is deserving of a missile strike and should negotiate accordingly.
liberalhawk- I was a kid when Goldwater ran, and remember how he seemed so far to the right, people thought he was nuts, but learned more about him recently. Although I’m a liberal, I do respect him, because when he said he believed in less government, he meant it. His libertarian streak would have never fit in with today’s GOP. Goldwater wanted people to either take him or leave him, but he never changed his views to win an election the way almost all modern-day Republicans have. Its true he did not vote for civil rights legislation, but none of the Southern Democrats (except LBJ of course) did either- it was considered very progressive back then.

The New Deal and replacement of constitutional federalism by the modern and largely unitary Washington-centered welfare state won; Goldwater and that constitutional federalism he tried to defend lost, for good, in 1964. There is probably no turning back now, just future cost controls and constraints on some of the continued excess.
It would have been interesting to see what would have happened in 1994 with more people like him as opposed to lesser lights who eventually reneged on term limit promises or like Gingrich, began doing things against what was offered in 1994 as soon as he got into office. (Gingrich wanted 12 years for House members as well as members of the Senate, strike one; Gingrich wanted to expand use of civil asset forfeiture in the Drug War, strike two…)
