I think Senators in the GOP have been cowed by conservative organizations like Hugh Hewitt’s victory caucus and threats from Karl Rove that they would be targetted for replacement if they take a stand against the president. Only a few have spoken out against Bush in over 6 years, and after that they they have not ended up voting against his policies. Its an authoritarian regime, where those who cause trouble are driven out of office.

Whoever replaces Gonzales may serve at the pleasure of the president, but first he or she must have the Consent of the Senate.

Exactly, this is what the controversy is about at its heart. Appointees are supposed to be approved by both the president and the Senate. That’s to help guarantee any nominee is both qualified and independent. The president can fire or replace him, but he’s not supposed to be able to replace him with anybody.

The US attorneys were fired because the president wanted to get “team players” on board, ones who didn’t need to submit to the Senate. That’s what the rider in the law was explicitly designed for.

The astonishing thing is that they got the rider while they had a completely subservient Congress. They didn’t even want to have to submit to the approval of Republican Senators.

It’s amazing that Congressional Republicans allowed themselves to be castrated that way.

I’d like to hear Arlen Specter explain why he jumped when the president told him to put the rider in the Patriot Act renewal.

Now that Chertoff has proven that he is an incompetent political hack at Homeland Security (many thought he needed to go along with Michael Brown for his lackluster performance during Katrina) he can prove he is just as incompetent a political hack at Justice,lol.

Also, those who serve at the pleasure of the president, now know that the stronger his assurance that they’re not going anywhere, the sooner they’ll be sent packing! Now Al will be free to spend more time with his family (DC Speak for you really f-d it up!)
