DLS:
I don't know why Clinton has to be reassessed in every conversation. The reasons would be an interesting topic for psychologists to address.

My comment about the French and the private lives of politicians was addressed to consider the fate of the current crop of politicians. Gingrich confessing his sins of love, Guiliani's and McCain's exes being mentioned repeatedly in the press, and so on.

Clinton had no more to do with this observation than he does in my comment of the moment: "the weather was quite pleasant here today".

> their private lives never cause a political scandal

Clinton was not mistreated. Also, the real issue was lying, not his gross misbehavior that yes, disgraced us (real) Americans [TM].

French political figures have one huge advantaga over their American counterparts: their private lives never cause a political scandal. It's considered guache to bring up love lives in a political context.
Chirac's private life gained him neither fans nor enemies.
