I think the more hidden and deeply troubling debt accumulation in American society is happening in home equity loans. A lot more money involved, homes at stake, and rapidly rising ARM interest rates. A recipe for disaster, on top of stagnant or falling home values.

Cartoon compliments of Pat Bagley here at the Salt Lake Tribune. His work is brilliant, insightful, cutting edge and often hilarious. Keep an eye on him, he’s great.

One has to separate what is illegal from what is merely unethical. I’m glad about the hearings, as I hope that exposing what is slimy will shame some companies into reexamining their practices.

As I pay my bills religiously, I get far fewer offers of credit cards than those I know who have a much spottier payment record. They are out to offer drinks to alcoholics.

Also, it’s easy to end up paying more in fees and penalties, which accrue interest at high rates, than the original charge.

Just like some companies are exploiting the concept of being green, I hope credit companies will start seeing ‘anti-usury’ as being a marketing lure.
