McCain’s Support Continues To Evaporate

Are we seeing the political implosion of Arizona Senator John McCain? This latest poll sure suggests we are:

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows the Arizona senator trailing Rudy Giuliani by more than 20 percentage points — and encountering doubts in the party about his age and steadfast support for the Iraq war.

Mr. McCain’s support “is softening,” says Democratic pollster Peter Hart, who conducted the Journal/NBC survey with Republican counterpart Neil Newhouse. Republican voters ..

I hope McCain remains a player until late in the game. Fortunes change often.

I believe he is one of the few candidates who is likely to make campaign reform and Congressional transparency a priority.

McCain is in the most difficult position of any of the GOP candidates. He has hung in with George Bush on the war, and so is attracting some of the disapproval from that fiasco. He has had to pander to the right on social issues, and ignore the fact that they have never considered him in their camp in the first place. For those who want a fresh new face, Giuliani offers an intriguing alternative. What I think is interesting, is that conservatives seem willing to overlook Giuli’s liberalism on social issues, while they dog McCain, whose positions are to the right of the NYC mayor. Also, it appears that a couple of weeks of post-9/11 leadership has turned Rudy into a hero, whereas McCain’s Vietnam era service and years as a POW are being largely overlooked. I’m not a big McCain supporter, but he seems like more of an American hero than Giuliani.
