Weiner’s Twitter DM Fail

Had I posted on this topic before I’d be eating my words. Oh well. The harder they fall…

He made the most elementary of Twitter mistakes, sending a public @reply instead of a direct message. Maybe he should have read the howto.

Mashable calls it:

…certainly the biggest “DM fail” we can think of (at least in terms of resulting media circus).

That’s not to say other high profile organizations haven’t been embarrassed by Twitter mistakes before. Earlier this year, a Chrysler employee was terminated after dropping the f-bomb on the automaker’s Twitter account, while a Red Cross social media specialist tweeted drunk on the organization’s behalf on account of a HootSuite slip up.

So will he survive?

He’s still kinda sorta new to Twitter (August last year) but he’d graduated to TweetDeck, which defaults to DM only if you’re replying to a DM. Of course, if you’re sharing a photo you took with your mobile phone, you’re probably not using TweetDeck but a Blackberry application.

    That’s “failure,” not “fail,” Joe.

As for Weiner, who apparently also was “sexting” with one or more women, was he aware that the wireless companies save the text message data, which can be provided upon a legal order.

It’s funny because of the coincidence elsewhere on here, with a new thread about Detroit (the automakers, not the city), but the city of Detroit was rocked by a scandal involving mayor Kwame Patrick, and one of the two main local newspapers published the text messages.

How long is it before Weiner’s messages are sought, which might be by Congress, by Nancy Pelosi if not by John Boehner, perhaps, in order to ascertain if the messages indicate they were being sent or that other illicit and concealed acts were occurring during “Congressional time,” as Weiner called it, or during other times when he should have been doing something else. And who might he name among others in Congress and other bad acts as well as actors, if this information were obtained (and ideally revealed)?

(What if it got petty but especially revealing — what, say, if Boehner sought a joint Dem-GOP acquisition and review of the text data, but then Pelosi opposed it?)

The hip-hop mayor carried on an actual physical relationship with someone on his staff, at tax payers expense. The mayor also was implicated in a murder and other extramarital affairs.
