The first two world wars started off in Europe. Yesterday, we were close to #3:
Switzerland invaded Liechtenstein. Michael H. Cognato summarizes what happened:
In an uncharacteristically aggressive move, the likes of which have not been seen in Western Europe in decades, a Swiss infantry patrol accidentally invaded Liechtenstein. In spite of Switzerland’s reputation for skilled and reliable mountaineering, 170 soldiers accidentally wandered across the border separating the two states. After about a mile into the tiny principality of 34,000, the Swiss realized where they were, turned around, and went back home.
Thank God for Liechtenstein’s peaceful and reasonable culture:
Markus Amman, an interior ministry spokesman, said nobody in Liechtenstein had even noticed the soldiers. “It’s not like they stormed over here with attack helicopters or something,” he said.
Jules Crittenden comments on this shocking news as well. His conclusion: the mice aren’t even roaring.
Well, I’m sure that if Switzerland would have invaded Liechtenstein with attack helicopters the latter’s non-existing army would have fought back with determination and passion, possibly igniting WW3. Perhaps Monaco and Luxembourg would even get involved.
This is better than a story in The Onion.
My daughter E-mailed me this just before I got call from my doctor. I couldn’t stop laughing and giggling, even as he was giving me some test results. I think he will be recomending phychiatric treatment for me the next time we speak.
hee hee hee…
War fever has gotten pretty bad when Switzerland starts invading its neighbors
Maybe they read my comments here yesterday about Europe relying too much on the US for military strength and got a bit carried away in trying to prove me wrong. LOL
Those Swiss are never satisfied. First they unleash their cheese on the world- shortchanging us w its holes, then the cuckoo clock, now this.
Nuke the bastards already!
Spokesman Dougie Feith claims that the world community is exaggerating the Swiss intentions. Bringing democracy to the world is ‘hard work’. They were just stolen Swiss Army knives.
Rudi: And did you ever notice how difficult it is to open one of their knives? It’s not like a switchblade, that can pop out w a flick of the wrist. While you try to open the damned thing to fend off a charging beast with a utensil, you’re dead. There is no end to their treachery and deceit.
cosmo – The untrain insurgents in Liechtenstein will have a hard time using the Swiss knives against the liberators
occupiers.Ah, Rudi, I think you’ve got it backwards. It just occurred to me what is really happening here: the Bush administration is setting up the case to invade Switzerland! It’s so obvious, I don’t know why I didn’t see it right away. First we’re seeing reports of this invasion and next it’ll be Swiss army knife caches uncovered in Iraq. Looks like Switzerland is the new member of the Axis of Evil LOL
My favorite line is that France has already surrendered.
I think it’s a Purim joke!
Ok, maybe I’m taking this a tad too seriously but given this is the most emailed story in the New York Times I couldn’t help but do a little research. The AP quotes the swiss daily Blick as the source of the story, yet there is absolutely nothing in their archive. There is also no evidence that “Markus Amman” the spokesman of the Interior ministry in Liechtenstein, even exists. Also, this is carried by the New York Times and the Guardian (and a few other english-speaking sources), yet not a single swiss or German paper. Do I dare to say – early april fools day????
