He's pretty much on point on everything. I like the fact that he wants to look at things from a birds eye view and take everything in when formulating his opinions...that's what my impression is of him to be honest. Fantastic start to the interview, MvdG!

C.S. good to hear that, I'm glad that you enjoyed the first part of the interview.

Also good to hear that your "kids’ curriculum so far does seem to include a good bit of geography" - hopefully it will come back more in general as well.

Yes be sure to read WGM. It's very interesting and very informative.

Alan - that would be very interesting, perhaps another time ;)

Good interview with Mr de Blij. As a former enemy of the former Soviet Union, I agree that I don't see Russia becoming a superpower again in the near or even far future.

But what would be interesting would be if Mr. de Blij would discuss how long he thinks America will remain a superpower, and an intact country.

You see, back in 1992 I read of a national geography conference in California which predicted that the 21st century would start to see slow separation of various regions of America--the Southwest would start to become economically/politically aligned with Latin America, the West Coast with Asia--from the rest of the country. Not by violence, but by various international agreements based on common interests. I remember one participant predicted the the US would become 9 semi-autonomous regions, based on economic and demographic similarities.

Don't know if Mr. de Blij would agree, but his thoughts on the subject would be interesting.

Alan

PS: Did he mention that Sweden and France are having sucess in reversing the economic decline, by providing help to working mothers?
Mabye you could try that in the Netherlands, if you could spare people from plugging leaks in the dikes with their fingers. ;) Sorry, had to get that in there.

Good interview so far, Michael, and I'll have to check out Blij's book. I'm pleased that my kids' curriculum so far does seem to include a good bit of geography, so perhaps we're starting to do better in the elementary grades (if anything, they seem to be stressing geography over history so far, so I'm hoping that it will balance out with all three parts that Blij mentions, the how, where and when.)

C.P.: I'm aware of that - Mick e-mailed me (I will interview him as well by the way). I will link to it later today and... don't spoil the fun man!

Anyway, lets restrict the comments in this comment section to the actual topic of this post, k?
