Quote of the Day

Posted on Carole King’s Facebook page:

Martin Luther King, Jr.
“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

  1. Kathy, as coincidences go this is just too much. I must tell this true story so you understand.

My 17 year old daughter does not read what I write at TMV, and we had not discussed the death of Osama bin Laden. So, she did not know my position.

Yesterday evening, my wife told me that our daughter had used her Facebook page to admonish friends not to celebrate the killing of bin Laden.

When I went to her room to tell her how proud I was that she would take such a stand, she downplayed what she had done, telling me that she had only posted a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. in response to what some friends said about the killing of bin Laden.

The quote she selected was the very same one you just published.

And what makes this coincidence even more amazing, I think, is the fact that the person (Carole Johnson) who put that quote on Carole King’s Facebook page did not mention Osama Bin Laden at all. I guess the connection is pretty obvious, given the timing of the quote posting relative to its meaning, but still, the fact that your daughter and I both had that same thought, that this quote was intended to refer to Osama bin Laden, adds to the force of the coincidence, I think.

Your daughter’s response to your praise says a whole lot about values that both she and you hold.

Our kids pick up a whole lot more of who we are and what we think than we think they do… Congratulations on your ability to set a good example.

    SteveK,

Being a parent myself (my daughter is four years older than Elijah’s), I agree wholeheartedly. The values we teach our children rub off.

    Kathy,

Thanks and yes the values we teach do rub off on the kids… as do the ones they see in us on their own. :)

To paraphrase four of the great child psychologists of our time we must teach our children well.

Oh, I *love* that song. It’s one of my favorites.

Even though this thread is dead (poet, eh?) I have to add a bit of trivia about the CSNY’s song “Teach Your Children Well.”

Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) was just learning to play the steel (pedal) guitar when asked to sit in with CSNY to record “Teach”

After his first take he said to the producer, “I think I’ve got it… let’ go again.”

To which the producer said, “Sorry, that’s a wrap!” And that’s what we’ve been listening to ever since.

Raw talent in these people is simply amazing!
