Rudy won't win the nod nor Prez- a) because of his financial dealings in S. Africa pre-Mandela and NYC was in sad shape b4 9/11. That luster from that terrible day won't last for 18 mos. when his opponents ask, 'What did Rudy do that no other Mayor would NOT have done?'

That is a compelling list. I would like to see a McCain/Giuliani Ticket versus Clinton/Obama. I can be delighted with either winner since both teams are primarily pragmatists rather than ideologues.

I would not support McCain, because he believes we are failing in Iraq because we have not sent enough troops in. This view leads me to believe that he would escalate the war way beyond the current surge. He has said that we either needed to surge or get out, but I can't see him redeploying forces any time soon.

Giuliani supports Bush's war policy. I actually like Hagel, even though he may have little chance due to his break with Bush on the war. Giuli actually did clean up NYC and make it safer, so I wouldn't call his terms as mayor a failure. Likewise, I think its a mistake to justify voting for him based on his post-9/11 leadership. We should remember that Bush had 90% approval ratings for his leadership following the catastrophe. Has that led to sound policy decisions or unifying leadership from his administration?

Isn't there some other viable choice in the Republican party?

Giuliani's only claim to fame is that he made some good speeches after 9/11. By all other accounts he was a terrible mayor.

I used to like McCain, but he has sold his soul to the extreme right and our current President. He has reversed positions with regard to detainee abuse, campaign financing and the religious right.
