I linked to chapter 6 of The Event yesterday, right after Mick LaSalle published it. A week ago, we had a long and passionate debate about The Event, some people liked it, some people didn’t.
Anyway, from now on I will link to the new chapter whenever it is published and, the next day, after everybody read the chapter, I thought it would be a good / fun idea to publish another post in order to ask some questions about the chapter we’ve just read, in an attempt to analyze it / share our thoughts on that specific chapter.
About chapter 6:
1- Does the role of the media strike you as far-fetched? If so, why if not why not? Personally, I consider it, in this situation, to be quite possible that the media would actually respond like they do in The Event.
2- What do you think of the rapper SOS? Did you get all the Eminem references? If so, name them. And… “judge a tree by its fruits” – does this also go for SOS? If so, are all his fruits (even after converting to Christianity) good? In what way does SOS represent the idea that one should not focus too much on appearances / that one should not judge someone just by looking at the outside? And… is there a contradiction here?
I have to agree with you, it is all possible. I can’t explain further but it’s how my gut feels about it. Don’t put anything past anyone is the golden rule here.
One of my favoire characters (along w/ the narrator and Sadie). The references? I got most of ‘em…Dr. Dre gone in “The Event,” (By the way I hope Premier and RZA went w/ Dre) He’s from Detroit, Dyed Blond hair, tatooed, HUGE pop star, etc.
I don’t want to spend much time answering and I hope I make sense answering, but actions speak louder than words or appearances and that’s what vibe I’m currently getting from the character, also, he’s willing to be the sacrificial lamb and is willing to stick his neck out for what he believes is the right thing…now he raps about it, so to the casual observer they’ll easily dismiss it…he’s following the Cassidy lyric “It’s a message in our music / I suggest you use it.” He’s taking the initiative through his music, a powerful way to convey a message. I think in order to get the whole story, there are going to be contraditions, especially with the Em references. But also consider EVERYONE has skeletons in their closet and they may contradict a message someone is trying to convey, but if those skeletons are acknowledged out in the open, then the meaning of the message is in essence purified (See Em’s final battle rap in 8 Mile for a pseudo-example).
What about the lead up to the Iraq war?
What bout these sentences:
“If I get sniped tonight” and “Let me simply the rhyme just to amplify the noise” (Mick make me aware of the second one). Do you recognize them from any of Eminem’s works?
Yes, good comment.
I am wondering how East et alia will respond to SOS. Will they do something to him will they get rid of him or will they simply ignore the fuss he is creating?
I expect that there will be a Bill O’Reilly character coming up, very soon.
I’m not much of an Em fan so I can’t really remember or get inferences to those lyrics, MvdG
*puts on Gang Starr’s “Conspiracy”*
1 – It does strike me as far fetched. Simply because I can’t imagine sweeping the Rapture under the rug. Its a bona fide miracle. Not like crop circles, alien sightings, or tent revival faith healings. A clearly predicted event, not allegorical, which occured and can not be denied. Even I, a stone cold atheist, would be in my nearest church inside of 5 seconds looking for some unlevened bread and a sip of wine.
But I know its a work of fiction and that duplicity is part of the story, so I swallowed it.
2 – Rapper is almost predictable in a way. I figured some anti-establishment type was going to lead the call to sanity. I would have prefered an ultraconservative who was shocked by events into becoming more moderate and logical in applying his/her ideals to the masses. Seems to me folks on the left would only be more inspired by the fact that mostly left folks were taken and its message to the right should have gotten thru to at least a few.
Fantastic point on #2, Sam! A great angle to look at things.
