Part II: The Republicans in the ’08 Presidential Race
The nation’s 55th quadrennial orgy continues

February 1, 2007 – Last week we took a look at the upcoming Quadrennial Orgy of presidential politics from the Democrats’ perspective. Now it is the Republicans’ turn to be run over by the Crystal Ball. There isn’t a GOP candidate out there who isn’t happy November 2008 is over 22 months away. You wouldn’t need a political analyst to forecast the results of the race for the White House if the election were scheduled in the next half year.

The Conservatives’ Days of Malaise
A quick peek inside the base’s team huddle

February 1, 2007 – I’m sure some very wise person once said that the best time to measure the true character of a party is in its moment of defeat, not its moment of triumph. And so it was with keen anticipation and curiosity that the Crystal Ball attended this past weekend’s Conservative Summit, a well-organized Washington powwow of the conservative movement’s core activists and leading minds held by the National Review Institute.

The president’s policy on Iraq is tearing apart the Republican party. Loyalists, who either are not up for election in ’08 or are running in safe districts, are splintering off from those who fear that the party’s standing will shrink further if we are still over there by the next election. IMO, it is the price they are paying for supporting a failed policy without question for 3 1/2 years. Unlike the president, many congressional Republicans can’t afford to dismiss the polls.
