This is Ridiculous!

I have never watched the TV show “Grey’s Anatomy” and until recently had never heard of the actor Isaiah Washington. Apparently, he referred to someone sharing my sexual orientation by using a BAD NAME. According to the AP, he is now “in treatment” for this crime. This is PC (Political-Correctness) pushed to the point of total ridiculousness. I’m not offended by his language nearly so much as by the idiocy of the self-proclaimed enforcers of PC norms.

I’ll bet this actor ends up hating us worse than he did before.

Holly, I read about that too and didn’t even know there was a “treatment” for it. Learn something new every day, besides, if anyone should go it’s the “Focus On the Family” crowd. :)

  2. CStanley says:

Wow, that story reads like parody.

I believe the issue was dead until he called everyone a bald face liar at the Golden Globes and said the whole incident didn’t occur. I don’t think he needs treatment for that, but he needs anger management since the whole thing was due to a blow-up related to Dempsey being late and he telling Dempsey that he wasn’t his “faggot.” Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and Dempsey had told some staff member he felt had disrepsected him that he wasn’t his “nigger.” I don’t think that treatment et cetera would be the method of dealing with it, but instead he would have been fired. If not then, perhaps when he then denied it to everyone a few months later despite the dozens of witnesses to the contrary. This guy isn’t a victim, he’s a first class a-hole.

I saw Grey’s Anatomy for the first time over Christmas when my nieces were watching the first season of DVD. I was laughing so hard they got mad at me.

For a hospital set in Seattle to have three African-American surgeons and only one Asian-American surgeon is so unrealistic is that it borders on being Fantasyland. I would bet that in any teaching Hospital on the West Coast that the Asian-American physician far outnumber the African-American physicians and especially in Seattle.

I expect the writers have never set foot inside a real tertiary medical center.

Also, people should know that female surgeons generally do not wear makeup, ear rings or Jewelry while at work and very few spend money of nice hair since they wear headcoverings all day.

Mr Mod: You have no idea what tone nor situation th eterm was used in. Given the PC Mafia’s recent behavior it’s likely that a nothing incident was blown up.

People who are offended at every little deviation from themselves are the problem, not someone w a big mouth.

  6. uncle joe mccarthy says:

guess holly and others here just dont get it

this is the new thing….say or do something stupid, apologize and go to treatment

im just amazed that washington didnt admit to a substance abuse problem and also to being molested by a priest when he was a boy

whatever happened to taking responsibility for ones actions and moving on

  7. Mr. Moderate says:

    cosmoetica,

I don’t disagree that people are overly sensitive nowadays. However I think you’ll agree that if it had been someone using the n-word in a derogatory way, calling a female co-star the c-word, or saying that the person’s belief in Jesus made them crazy, then people wouldn’t find it to be such a problem. Because it is in the orbit of the gay issues it’s much more acceptable for some reason.

  8. Chuck Prez says:

But it’s quite alright for the President of Israel to rape a woman though, right Holly?

(i’m being somewhat facetious here…SOMEWHAT…just playing my devil’s advocate role)

  9. Rudi says:

I guess some people here miss the ‘old Archie Bunker’. What happens when ethnic blood is transfused…….

  10. Rudi says:

CP Are you turning into an anti-Semite?

  11. Chuck Prez says:

Absolutely not, Rudi. Just pointing out the lack of up-in-armsness (that’s not even a word) of this place in certain situations. I’d be up in arms if ANYONE raped a woman. Holly knows i’m not Anti-Semitic but I’ll be devil’s advocate once in a while. If Ahmenakgdjagdigjdsigopaewjad or whatever the hell his name is, or Bush, or the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, of the Prime Minister of India, or Tony Blair, or Musharraf, or any other leader raped a woman, I’d want their heads too.

  12. David B says:

CP: as a question, did anyone anywhere defend the Israeli President? He’s going to either resign or get impeached, and after that will stand trial (consider the comparisons which could be drawn to the members of the US government – various scoundrels of both parties have continued in office [and been re-elected!] after being accused of serious malfeasance).

Also, as a clarification, “President” in Israel is a symbolic post. The person who leads the government there is the Prime Minister.

But in any case, what exactly does your question have to do with Holly’s comments lamenting political correctness? (i.e. why would your comment not be trolling?)

  13. PatHMV says:

    How about Bill Clinton, Chuck?

But back on topic… Holly, you are so right. Washington’s insult was certainly wrong, and his later lying denial even more egregiously so. But we absolutely must resist any tendency to label those who transgress society’s norms as “insane” or otherwise in need of “treatment”. That’s a dangerous game, which ultimately will lead to dissenters of all stripes locked away or forcibly “treated” to “adjust” their thought processes.

  14. Rudi says:

Will his traetment include those ‘good ole 1950′s treatments’ like electric shock or power drill lobotomy. Will the doctor be a Shia Iraqis? Will a large Injun smother him and run off into the sunset? Why ddn’t these celeb’s go to rehab in Saltillo or PhenomPenn(sp)?

  15. Lynx says:

Treatment? Oh christ, it’s the new catchall excuse isn’t it, rehab, treatment, medical care. I’m sorry, I’m sick, I can’t help myself. Gimme a break, he was an ass, he should apologize for being an ass to the offended party and none of it has enough importance to reach beyond the coffee room. If he had HIT the other guy for being gay, that would be another matter, that’s assault, but calling him a bad word? Make him write lines on the bloody blackboard, like all children.

  16. Ryan S. says:

How can anyone say treatment is unwarranted? Without knowing exactly what was said, how it was said, what if anything was thrown? All I know is if I had a temper tantrum and stormed out of the office. I prolly wouldn’t have a job anymore.

  17. PatHMV says:

Ryan, punishing someone for inappropriate action is one thing, treatment is another. I’d have no problem with firing Washington, depending on the exact circumstances, but suggesting that he is in need of mental health treatment is an entirely different matter. That implies, among many other things, that he is not responsible for his own actions, because he was “sick”.

  18. Nick says:

For what it’s worth, I’m not sure there’s a reason to get worked up over the specific use of the word “treatment” to describe what’s going on.

For one thing, I’m pretty sure the headline writer was going for a play on words… doctor… treatment… get it? Ha. (What’s the deal with headline writers lately?) Based on a quick scan of Google News, the majority of headlines seem to be calling it “counseling.” I’m not sure if that’s any better.

But names aside, I haven’t found anything specific about exactly what the “treatment” consists of. It could just be an unfortunate name for what the rest of corporate America calls “sensitivity training.” If it were nothing more than that, would you still be as upset? If you are, there’s a lot more to be upset about than singling out this one case.
